Job Description: Great Basin Bird Observatory (GBBO) is seeking qualified avian field technicians for work on multiple job sites in Arizona/California/Nevada. Primary duties will include conducting Pinyon Jay surveys (presence/absence and collecting behavioral data) in the Masonic Mountains near Bridgeport, CA and mapping cone productivity of pinyon stands in Northern Arizona. Mortality monitoring at the Crescent Dunes Solar Facility in Tonopah, NV will be conducted for 7 consecutive days each month. Working and camping remotely in varying conditions is required. You may be working up to 10 days at a time with limited cell service (in some beautiful areas!), with the possibility of backcountry camping. All data will be collected using ESRI Field Maps.
These temporary, full-time positions will last from mid July to early September with the possibility to extend part-time work in Tonopah.
Qualifications: Applicants must have prior experience with avian monitoring, experience working in the western/southwestern U.S., experience driving 4x4 vehicles over rough terrain, be in excellent physical condition and be comfortable hiking in rugged off-trail conditions (up to 10km a day). Applicants be comfortable working and camping independently or with a partner in remote locations and willing to work long days in the field. Survey sites may require working with a partner with little or no contact with the outside world for up to 10 days. Good communication skills and a willingness to live and work with a field crew are essential. Experience with field data collection using Field Maps is preferred.
Compensation: $2,400-$2,600/month DOE. Vehicle will be provided.
