Pinyon Jay Field Technician/Avian Mortality Survey Technician Job Description: Great Basin Bird Observatory (GBBO) is seeking qualified avian field technicians to conduct Pinyon Jay surveys at multiple study sites in Nevada. Primary duties will include surveying plots for Pinyon Jay presence/absence and documenting behavioral sightings using ESRI field maps. We will also be conducting nesting and colony surveys in select locations. Mortality monitoring at the Crescent Dunes Solar Facility in Tonopah, NV will be conducted for 7 consecutive days each month. Surveyors should expect to walk up to 10 kilometers a day over potentially rigorous terrain. Working and camping remotely in varying conditions and potentially long drives is required. You may be working up to 10 days at a time with limited cell service (in some beautiful areas!), with the possibility of backcountry camping. Housing will be provided in Reno, NV and Tonopah, NV. These temporary, full-time positions will last from March through May with the possibility of extension through the fall. Qualifications: Applicants must have prior experience with avian monitoring, ideally in the western/southwestern U.S., driving 4x4 vehicles over rough terrain, be in excellent physical condition and comfortable hiking in rugged off-trail conditions. Applicants should be able to demonstrate their ability to identify Pinyon Jays in the field and preference will be given to those who can demonstrate knowledge on Pinyon Jay behavior or previous experience working in Pinyon-Juniper woodlands. Experience conducting nesting surveys or point counts is a plus. Experience with 4x4 driving and field data collection using Field Maps is preferred. Applicants should be comfortable working and camping independently or with a partner in remote locations and willing to work long days in the field. Survey sites may require working with a partner with little or no contact with the outside world for up to 10 days. A good sense of humor and sense of adventure is also a plus!   3. Job Description: Great Basin Bird Observatory (GBBO) has immediate openings for one to two part time Field Biologists to conduct avian and bat mortality surveys at a wind project. Surveyors will navigate using a handheld GPS unit and gather field data using ESRI Field Maps. Surveyors will collect fatalities, then process and sample specimens in the lab. Experience with bird and bat identification is helpful, but not necessary. The position is 2 to 4 days (estimated 14 to 35 hours, occasionally more), per week. There is the possibility to work on other GBBO monitoring projects in CA and NV. There is also a good possibility to work additional hours handling dogs with another organization (Mussel Dogs). If there is interest and sufficient experience, surveyors might be trained to become a Detection K9 handler over the winter. If qualified (which could take 3-4 months), the surveyor would conduct avian and bat searches with canines starting in Spring 2024. Qualifications: Ideal applicants should have prior Wildlife Biology field experience. Previous dog handling/training experience is a plus. Applicants must be comfortable working with minimal supervision, hiking over uneven ground in hot, cold, muddy, wet, and rainy weather, carrying up to 15 pounds of gear/supplies. Applicants must have their own AWD/4X4 vehicle, but partial time and mileage for travel to the work site, and all mileage on site, will be provided. Candidates must be within a reasonable weekly commute from Livermore. Housing (Airbnb, etc. - at GBBO’s discretion) provided for some overnight stays. Experience with field data collection using ESRI Field Maps is preferred. Location: Livermore, California Compensation: $25 to $32 per hour, DOE. You may be working up to 10 days at a time with limited cell service (in some beautiful areas!), with the possibility of backcountry camping. All data will be collected using ESRI Field Maps. These temporary, full-time positions will last from mid July to early September with the possibility to extend part-time work in Tonopah. Qualifications: Applicants must have prior experience with avian monitoring, experience working in the western/southwestern U.S., experience driving 4x4 vehicles over rough terrain, be in excellent physical condition and be comfortable hiking in rugged off-trail conditions (up to 10km a day). Applicants be comfortable working and camping independently or with a partner in remote locations and willing to work long days in the field. Survey sites may require working with a partner with little or no contact with the outside world for up to 10 days. Good communication skills and a willingness to live and work with a field crew are essential. Experience with field data collection using Field Maps is preferred.
