Wild Bird Research Group is offering a remote, part-time position for a Digital Media Coordinator. The Digital Media Coordinator will be tasked with utilizing multiple platforms and creating written media (fact sheets, emails, social media posts, newsletter articles, press releases, posters, etc.) to communicate information about birds, bird-related conservation topics, and developments in WBRG’s research projects to our followers and to the general public. The individual will play an integral role in creating the published content that will be the organization's public face. The Digital Media Coordinator will work closely with our organization’s leadership to produce content that helps achieve our organization’s goals for 2024.
Ideal candidates will: have the ability to write engaging content that is scientifically accurate but understandable by the general public; have a strong interest in birds and a grasp of bird biology and conservation; have a strong work ethic and be capable of working remotely and independently; and bring creativity, enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, thoroughness, and originality to their work. Because information is more effectively conveyed in combination with visually appealing graphics, candidates that also have experience with graphic design and graphic design software (Wordpress, Publisher, Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva, etc.) will be given priority.
This job is approximately 4-6 hours per week and spans 6 months with the opportunity to renew based on performance and mutual satisfaction. Compensation will be $18 - 22 per hour depending on experience. The position will be primarily or entirely remote and the schedule can be flexible. The Digital Media Coordinator will report directly to the organization’s Executive Director and will interface regularly with the research team, the Board of Directors, and the Board’s various committees. Below is a list of responsibilities that can vary from week to week.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and execute a comprehensive social media strategy that aligns with our organization’s voice and goals.
Create engaging, original content for various social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.), including posts, stories, and videos.
Ensure scientific accuracy of content through fact-checking and communication with research team members
Write and distribute newsletters via Mailchimp, manage subscriber lists, and analyze performance metrics to optimize engagement.
Create and publish timely news articles on our website (Wordpress)
Monitor social media and online trends to stay ahead of digital marketing developments, adjusting strategies as necessary.
Analyze and report on the performance of digital communications efforts, using data to inform future strategies.
Create material for print (brochures, information pamphlets, donation solicitation)
Prepare reports for donors and funding agencies, outlining the impact of their contributions on the organization's projects.
Summarize scientific findings into comprehensible posts, articles, and graphics
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent work experience.
- Proven experience in social media, creating news articles, and managing an email group with newsletter updates.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey the organization's mission and goals.
- Experience with graphic design and graphic design software (Wordpress, Publisher, Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or Canva, etc.)

A short (1-page maximum) example of original science writing on any topic relating to birds or bird research. This can be an excerpt if you have applicable past work. The writing should be journalistic in style, summarizing scientific information on the topic of birds in language that would be engaging and understandable to the general public.

Operations
WBRG and its partners conduct various research projects and education programs in the eastern U.S. and Central America, including; MoSI banding in Costa Rica; MAPS banding in NC and NJ; owl migration and winter ecology research in NJ; Motus research in NC; educational programing and outreach at all stations; and offers volunteer and internship opportunities at all stations.
