The full announcement can be found at: https://jobs.oregonstate.edu/postings/88077 This recruitment will be used to fill 8 full-time Temporary Biological Sciences Research Technician 2 positions for the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University (OSU). Field season is March through August 31 annually. This job requires driving government owned vehicles on primitive forest roads and navigating difficult terrain on foot to access owl sites and locate/handle owls during both the day and night. The employee works independently, and must be able to follow an established protocol to determine nest and reproductive status of owls in the field. The employee must frequently work alone in remote forest areas and navigate over mountainous terrain. Orienteering skills, including the use of maps, compass, and handheld GPS units are essential to the collection of data in the field. The work is physically strenuous and involves working and hiking in rain, snow, heat, and on steep, brushy slopes. The employee should be comfortable performing these duties at night, well after dark. Job duties: 65% Data Collection -Conduct surveys for northern spotted owls. _Confirm owl presence and identity by auditory detections and visual observation of color bands. -Capture and band owls. -Work with vegetation maps and aerial photographs to determine vegetation characteristics, floristics, and physiography of owl roost and nest locations. -Collect and analyze owl pellets to determine food habits. -Driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle on primitive forest roads is required. 15% Field Notes & Mapping Maintain accurate field notes (hard copy) and mapping locations of owl observations. 5% Maintenance of Equipment & Vehicles Maintain field equipment and government vehicles to ensure optimal working condition and safety standards. 5% Office Work -Using a computer, enter and summarize research data using Access database. -Coordinate daily assignments with crew mates to identify work locations, etc. 5% Training -Participate in online training as required. 5% Other duties as assigned. Required qualifications: -Two years of college-level courses in Wildlife Ecology or a closely related field and one year of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. -Previous field experience, including orienteering skills, the use of maps, compass, and handheld GPS units or similar devices. -Ability to participate in strenuous work, involving working and hiking in rain, snow, heat, and on steep, brushy slopes. -Ability to comfortably perform duties at night, well after dark. -Good night and color vision and average or above hearing. -Ability to perform duties with a high degree of quality, uniformity, and timeliness. -Ability to work well independently and as a member of a team. -Some research locations require the ability to live and work in close quarters and in isolated settings for extended periods of time. -This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions. -This position must possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record while serving in the position; therefore, the incumbent must provide a copy of their driving history for the past 2 years from the issuing state’s Dept. of Motor Vehicles. Preferred qualifications: -Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Ecology or related field. -Familiarity/experience working with spotted owls (observing, capturing, and banding/marking techniques). -Ability to operate a 4 wheel drive vehicle. -A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
