The Coastal Research and Extension Center at Mississippi State University (MSU), located in Biloxi, MS, is seeking a full-time avian ecologist/data manager at the level of Research Program Manager (https://explore.msujobs.msstate.edu/en-us/job/499794/research-program-manager). Outstanding candidates with a strong interest/expertise in applied ecological research, avian conservation and/or wetland conservation, and data management are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will work with faculty, research scientists, staff and students from Mississippi State University, other universities, nonprofits and natural resource agencies across the Gulf of Mexico Region on a multi-state five year project studying the impacts of prescribed fire on high marsh habitats in relation to Mottled Ducks and Yellow and Black Rails. Job duties will involve project coordination activities in coastal Mississippi and Alabama, including hiring and training intermittent workers, conducting marsh bird and vegetation field surveys, and capturing and banding Yellow and Black Rails. A second major duty of this position will involve data management, including the creation and maintenance of project databases, meta-data creation and maintenance, preparation of data sets for analysis as well as short and long term data archiving, training and coordination of data collection practices with field crews, management and QA/QC of spatial and non-spatial datasets, and web database management. Required qualifications: M.S. or Ph.D. in natural resources, wildlife science, coastal conservation, biological sciences, or comparable field. Previous experience in project coordination/team leadership. Experience conducting avian field and vegetation surveys. Previous experience with data management required. Applicants be self-motivated, fit well in a multidisciplinary team environment, handle multiple tasks at once and exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills. Preferred qualifications: Demonstrated skills in SQL or web database development, Microsoft Access, ArcGIS, R, and scientific writing as well as a demonstrated success working closely with management agencies on applied questions in wildlife conservation is preferred. Additional professional development opportunities will include report writing, scientific presentation preparation, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and publication of peer-reviewed articles. Starting salary for this full-time, 5-year position will be $59,400 + including a full benefits package ( https://www.hrm.msstate.edu/benefits/).
