  1. Post-Doctoral Researcher modeling Brown Treesnake and native bird population dynamics Postdoctoral Researcher/Modeler needed to develop population models of predator-prey interactions between Brown Treesnakes (BTS) and native Guam avifauna. Non-native BTS have decimated Guam’s native avifauna, but recent efforts to reduce density of snakes provides hope of reintroducing native avifauna to Guam’s forests. But short of total elimination, what densities of BTS would allow for the persistence of native birds, and would different species of birds tolerate different densities of BTS depending on their particular life history characteristics? Identifying BTS density thresholds that would potentially allow for successful reintroductions is a critical first step in eventual refaunation of Guam. Succesful applicant is expected to combine demographic information on Guam’s native avifauna with empirical data on BTS density and encounter rates from both control and non-control areas to develop models to estimate levels of density that allow persistence of bird species. Qualifications include PhD or PhD candidacy from an accredited college or university in Wildlife Biology, Biostatistics/Biometry, Quantitative Ecology, or Biology, 1-2 years of ecological modeling, particularly population modeling, and demonstrable knowledge in various statistical programming environments (e.g., R, JAGS, Stan). Requires strong experience in scientific writing and editing, literature searches, statistical applications, create predictive models, and excellent communication skills both in writing and verbally. Prior experience in the use of statistical models for the analysis of management decisions or adaptive management is desired. Incorporation of work product into a PhD dissertation is negotiable. Salary and duration of appointment will be commensurate with experience and dictated by available grant funding. Preferred duty station is Barrigada, Guam, or Hilo, Hawaii. Expected analysis includes Point Process Models to characterize space use, resource selection, and temporal patterns in avian movement behavior; develop models to characterize activity patterns from continuous tracking data; and incorporate spatial information with movement data to evaluate covariates of movement behavior. Develops analytical pipelines using standard approaches from recent ecological literature, as well as developing novel approaches to analyzing telemetry data. Works with research team leads, project collaborators, and species experts to ensure sound interpretations of movement and spatial analysis, taking both lead and supporting authorship roles on multiple publications. Careful attention to data management and analysis documentation important. Trains and assists others in data management and analysis. PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: PhD from an accredited college or university in Wildlife Biology, Biostatistics/Biometry, Quantitative Ecology, Biology, or other quantitative field. One to two years of experience in wildlife movement modeling, including spatial analysis. Raptor banders needed for study of Hawaiian Hawks: 2 banders are needed for a study of movement and habitat use of the endangered Hawaiian Hawk (I’o) across a habitat gradient from intact forest to urban landscapes. Work will focus on the capture, measurement, and attachment of backpack GPS+GSM tracking devices to hawks targeted in multiple locations on Hawaii Island. This research seeks to evaluate movement patterns across a range of habitats to help inform conservation actions for this endemic Hawaiian species. Applicants must have demonstrable capture, banding, and backpack harness attachment experience for raptors, ideally experience with Buteos and use of bal-chatri and dho-gazza traps. The work is planned to begin in early October 2019 and continue into February 2020. Salary will be approximately $2,830/month.
