PEPtBO is hiring for one of these two positions depending on experience/skill level (pay will scale with experience): Bander-in-charge (BIC) OR Assistant Bander (AB) Important: Please make sure to note in your cover letter which position you are applying for (details of experience requirements and responsibilities for each position are listed below). The Bander-in-charge position will entail much more responsibility and working independently than the Assistant Bander position even though a lot of the general duties are the same. Position details: The PEPtBO banding station is located at beautiful Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area in Prince Edward County, Ontario. For either position, grocery expenses are covered and there is a field house located next to the banding station which provides (free) accommodation for banders. The house has all basic modern accommodations including wifi. The successful applicant will work under the direction of the Station Manager, and the Banding, Research, and Training Committee (BRT) of the Board. The position will entail working closely with the Station Manager to complete the following responsibilities: the competent and efficient running of the banding and Migration Monitoring programs, supervising and training volunteers, and managing data collection including the preparation of regular reports as directed. It is preferred that the applicant has sufficient banding experience to be eligible to obtain a Canadian Bird banding sub-permit - this is a requirement for the BIC position as it includes acting as Bander-in-charge and carrying out station management responsibilities when the Station Manager is not on-site - The job runs from April 1st 2024- November 15th 2024 with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability Qualifications: - Experience working at a high-volume migration station is preferred but some banding experience is required (for AB position) - Eligibility for a Canadian sub-permit for songbirds, land birds, owls, and audio lures is preferred - Experience and confidence with training volunteers in extractions and banding - Comfort with presenting to the public on bird banding and migration - Comfortable working in harsh conditions (heat, cold, and mosquitoes), and walking/hiking long distances (some days will require 10km+) - Experience preparing social media posts is an asset - Experience with MAPS banding is an asset - Ability to work both independently and as part of a diverse team Additional requirements for BIC position: - Experience and comfort working at a high-volume migration station necessary - Eligibility for a Canadian sub-permit for songbirds, land birds, owls, and audio lures is required Description of responsibilities: The successful applicant will assist the Station Manager in the following 4 banding operations to complete the responsibilities below, and provide regular updates for social media posts by PEPtBO. - Spring Migration Monitoring - Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) Program - Fall Migration Monitoring - Occasional nights for Owl Migration Monitoring program *Direct any questions to Ashley Jensen: amjensen080@gmail.com Compensation: $2,000-3,250 per month (commensurate with experience) PLUS food and housing are provided Other Requirements: Be eligible to work in Canada & possess a personal vehicle To Apply: Send a cover letter and resume to nickbartok@hotmail.com AND amjensen080@gmail.com with 3 references (at least 1 banding reference) Last date to apply is January 30th 2024
