Description: The Great Basin Institute is working cooperatively with The Peregrine Fund’s California Condor Reintroduction Program based in Vermilion Cliffs, AZ to support the greater California Condor Recovery Program. Two (2) Monitoring Technicians will be selected to serve as an AmeriCorps volunteer to assist in management of the free flying population of California Condors in northern Arizona and southern Utah. This is a 6-month commitment, with the potential of an additional 6 months if both parties should agree to continue the relationship, during which volunteer member will work in the Grand Canyon ecoregion. Selected applicants will track this population throughout its range using radio telemetry and by ground-truthing GPS transmitter data. The volunteer will observe condor behavior at feeding sites, roosts and nests. The applicant will have the opportunity to assist in the handling of condors during annual trapping efforts. The Peregrine Fund will provide training to gain experience with condor specific trapping and handling techniques. Field work requires the ability to work independently and as a team; work and sometimes camp in remote areas during inclement weather or harsh environmental conditions; travel via ATV, 4WD vehicle, or by foot, in steep mountainous terrain; carry 50 lb carcasses to feeding sites; keep detailed field notes; follow data collection protocols for the collection and entry of accurate and consistent data; and assist in routine office work. Contract Timeline: This is a 6-month AmeriCorps commitment, starting in late-March/early-April but we can be flexible for the right person. Location: The Peregrine Fund’s field headquarters for the Condor Reintroduction Program is located in the small town of Vermilion Cliffs, AZ, located two hours north of Flagstaff, 30 miles south from the Utah border and a 45-minute drive from Page, AZ, where the nearest grocery store is located. Vermilion Cliffs is considered to be high desert at 4,000 ft elevation and boasts incredible scenery as well as a variety of weather conditions spanning heat in excess of 100 degrees and winters with below freezing temperatures. Compensation and Benefits: This is an AmeriCorps volunteer position. • Total Living Allowance: Up to $5,687.50 based on length of term (split up bi-weekly throughout term) • Education Award: $3,247.50 upon successful completion of full-service term. (May be used for past, present or future educational expenses, including payment of qualifying federal student loans. These payments are made in addition to the Education Award and are not deducted from your Education Award balance. To be eligible for this service, the loan must have been placed in forbearance for the service period, and you must have successfully completed a term of service and received an Education Award. Two (2) Monitoring Technicians will be selected to serve as AmeriCorps members to assist in management of the free flying population of California Condors in southern California. This is a 6-month commitment during which the technicians will receive a living allowance while serving on and around one of two wildlife refuges central to condor activity in Southern CA. This position focuses on management of the free flying population of California Condors in Southern California. Selected applicants will track this population throughout its range using radio telemetry and by ground-truthing GPS transmitter data. Technicians will observe condor behavior at feeding sites, roosts and nests. Field work requires the ability to work independently and as a team; work and sometimes camp in remote areas during inclement weather or harsh environmental conditions; travel via UTV, 4WD vehicle, or by foot, in steep mountainous terrain; carry 50lb carcasses to feeding sites; keep detailed field notes; follow data collection protocols for the collection and entry of accurate and consistent data; and assist in routine office work. Description: Great Basin Institute (GBI), in cooperation with Northern California Condor Restoration Program (NCCRP), is recruiting up to two (2) AmeriCorps technicians to conduct California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus) animal husbandry and population monitoring activities in Northern California and the broader region. Technicians will gain valuable endangered species conservation experience and have the privileged opportunity to contribute to the reintroduction and management of the first condors to exist in northern California since their extirpation more than a century ago. NCCRP is a collaborative, multiagency, conservation partnership between The Yurok Tribe and Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP; National Park Service). NCCRP is committed to the restoration of California condors to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Primary Responsibilities: Technician duties will be a mix of both office-based and field-based work, a mix that varies largely upon the status and needs of the condor flock. Schedules may vary based on project needs, but technicians will serve an average of 32 hours per week, typically with a four-days-on and three-days-off schedule. Technicians will coordinate with NCCRP and RNSP staff, as well as staff from partner organizations, and will report to the NCCRP Manager and the NCCRP Lead Field Biologist. Technicians must be able to competently perform all necessary field duties, which are diverse and variable throughout the day, and which include: • Field-tracking and monitoring condors via radio- and satellite-telemetry and visual observations; • Collecting, entering, and managing data on condor activity, behavior, health, and other metrics using datasheets, tablets, and other devices, in both field and office settings; • Maintaining NCCRP facilities, vehicles, and equipment, including cleaning and organizing, light construction, and vegetation management; • Handling domestic and wild animal carcasses, including calves, goats, pigs, and deer, for use as condor food resources; • Navigating by foot and vehicle in remote locations using GPS units, compass, and maps; • Assisting with condor trapping and handling; and • Interacting and sharing information in a professional manner with diverse audiences, including private landowners, the general public, and representatives from collaborating organizations. • A positive attitude and interest in leveraging this opportunity to learn and develop a wildlife biology skillset is critical. Contract Timeline: • Through this announcement, NCCRP will hire two, 11-month appointments (46 weeks) beginning April 2024, or upon availability. • Extensions of up to several months can be available for individuals who have demonstrated superlative performance. Location: Technicians will be based near NCCRP headquarters in Orick, California, within Yurok Ancestral Territory and lands managed by Redwood National and State Parks, and mere minutes from the world’s tallest trees, the Pacific Ocean, and countless recreational opportunities. Description: The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the Summit Lake Paiute Tribe (SLPT), is recruiting one Avian Research Associate to perform tasks associated with surveying and monitoring raptors, songbirds and waterfowl and their habitats. The associate will work with SLPT Natural Resources Department staff to collect data on migratory birds on and around Summit Lake Indian Reservation. The associate will also collect data on vegetation composition and metrics in the shrub-steppe habitat in association with migratory bird activities. The candidate will be expected to adhere to survey protocols established by SLPT Natural Resource Department and assist with other natural resource objectives as needed. POSITION DESCRIPTION: 1. Conduct point and transect surveys for songbirds periodically throughout the breeding season 2. Conduct surveys for bald eagles and monitor foraging and nesting behaviors 3. Conduct boat-based surveys for waterfowl 4. Assist with deployment of UAVs to survey and monitor waterfowl 5. Collect and manage a variety of physical and electronic data on various projects 6. Occasionally assist with sage-grouse captures, lek counts, and nest and brood monitoring 7. Conduct vegetation surveys as needed at designated survey points across various habitats 8. Occasionally assist with other natural resource projects as needed, such as water quality monitoring, fence and station maintenance, community outreach, and fisheries monitoring.
