The Bird Genoscape Project (BGP), based at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO, is currently in search of a Postdoctoral Fellow specializing in Conservation Genomics and Comparative Phylogeography. This position encompasses both basic scientific research and practical applications, making it an ideal match for individuals aspiring to advance their academic careers while honing their ability to convey scientific findings to diverse audiences beyond academia. On the scientific front, the successful candidate will employ comparative phylogenomic and spatial genetic methods to analyze patterns of population structure among various North American migratory bird species. On the applied side, the candidate will have the opportunity to work with non-profit partners to make the resulting phylogeographic maps useful to the broader scientific community through web-based dissemination. In addition to close collaboration with our diverse team of technical staff, graduate students, senior researchers, and fellow post-docs at Colorado State University, the chosen candidate will work closely with Dr. Benjamin Winger, a BGP partner at the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology.
Required qualifications:
· Ph.D. by the time of start date in evolutionary biology, population genetics, integrative biology or some equivalent.
· Excellent communication (verbal and written) and organizational skills.
· Positive attitude and desire to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
· Strong expertise in genomics and its applications to evolutionary and conservation questions.
· Experience generating, analyzing, and/or integrating large datasets, including whole genome sequencing, RAD sequencing, or transcriptome sequencing.
Preferred qualifications:
· Fluency in Python or Perl, and R.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Colorado State University Associate Professor and Bird Genoscape Project Director, Dr. Kristen Ruegg and University of Michigan Assistant Professor, Dr. Benjamin Winger. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of extension for an additional year, contingent on performance and funding. The salary will range from $55,000 - 65,000 depending on experience. Preferred start date is approximately May 1, 2024.
