The Aeroecology Program at the University of Delaware is inviting 1-2 radar screening technicians to take part in our Great Lakes stopover habitat study. Our project aims to improve understanding of migratory land bird habitat use in the Great Lakes Region and inform stopover habitat objectives for land managers and conservation planners. We will use 11 weather surveillance radars around the Great Lakes to quantify migratory bird stopover distributions on a large scale, compiling 25 years of information to explore changes over time. Technicians will aid in visually screening radar data used in the project with the opportunity to learn about radar data processing with R and other research skills. Screening duties include identifying radar scans with bird movement as well as precipitation and insect signatures. This position will be based out of our Newark, Delaware campus and office space will be provided for in-person work. This is a non-benefited full-time position (40 hours/week) at $18 per hour, paid biweekly. Start date flexible, looking for technicians for 3-6 months depending on availability. No prior experience with radar data is required.
Qualifications for this position include:
- A strong interest in learning about radar aeroecology and bird migration
- Availability to work at the University of Delaware offices
- A good work ethic, positive attitude, and ability to work well with others
- Attention to detail
- Basic computer software skills including Microsoft Office and Google Apps required: (familiarity with R is desired but not required)
- Clear and effective communication with colleagues and supervisors
- Ability to work independently
