Assist with managing marbled murrelet surveys in the Coast Range. The successful candidate may be located anywhere in northwestern Oregon, but the ability to work part-time from our Portland office is preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Conduct on-site training and supervising of field crews, including weekly crew meetings
Assist in preseason project setup
Review survey schedules to ensure strict adherence to protocol
Audit field work, data, and other required paperwork
Communicating information between field crews and your supervisor, maintaining open communication with project management throughout the field season and providing daily updates.
Troubleshoot issues with crew equipment, computer, vehicles, etc.; notify supervisor of continued issues.
Conduct surveys for marbled murrelets
Likely to assist other projects in their survey efforts for a variety of wildlife species
Positions begin in early March and run through August, with the possibility of extension and/or earlier start assisting with pre-season setup depending on project needs. The successful candidate will need to attend a week-long training and certification for marbled murrelet surveys held in Northern California in late April. A company-owned work vehicle will be provided; there may be the option to use a personal vehicle for project activities and be reimbursed on a per-mile basis. The position will require a significant amount of travel and regular camping is expected.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should have a completed four-year degree in wildlife biology or a closely-related field. A minimum of two years of field experience is required and at least one year of supervisory experience is strongly preferred. Species-specific experience is not required if the applicant has strong field skills, basic bird identification skills, and an interest in avian biology. A portion of the daily work is pre-dawn or post-sunset and can be physically and mentally demanding. An ideal candidate will possess all of the following characteristics:
Excellent communication and management skills – ability to maintain a positive attitude and sense of humor, as well as uphold team morale throughout the field season.
Enthusiasm for the outdoors, endangered species, and mentoring entry-level biologists.
Strong data management and data collection skills
Integrity, quality, and accuracy in adhering to scientific protocols.
Willingness to travel depending on project needs
A consistent track record of working in a safe and efficient manner.
Excellent field skills: orienteering, GPS, map-reading skills.
Avid hikers with an ability and willingness to tackle the rigors of field work who are comfortable hiking alone and working odd hours in off-trail terrain in the dark and/or inclement weather.
Working knowledge of western bird identification by sight and sound.
Flexible, detail-oriented, resourceful, and comfortable working independently or as part of a team.
A valid driver’s license and the ability to navigate forest roads and operate a 4WD vehicle.
Applicants must have normal vision and hearing, with required proof (hearing screen results) to be submitted prior to the start of work.
