  1. Come join the Turnstone Environmental team, and spend your summer hiking throughout Oregon’s Coast Range, surveying for the endangered marbled murrelet! Turnstone is currently seeking to fill multiple Marbled Murrelet Surveyor and Crew Lead positions throughout Oregon. These are full-time, temporary-seasonal positions. LOCATION Forest Grove, McMinnville, Corvallis, Astoria and Tillamook, Oregon. SALARY RANGE & INCENTIVES Surveyors: $2650 -$3535/ month (equivalent to $15.30-$20.40 hourly) Crew Leaders: $3,200 – $3,975 Monthly ( equivalent to $18.50 – $23 Hourly) Reimbursement for work use of personal field capable vehicle, if desired Season Completion Bonus! Field housing (depending on location) Salary range is dependent upon project and applicant experience. SURVEYOR JOB DUTIES Conduct marbled murrelet surveys following an established protocol Work independently in the early morning hours (including pre-dawn) in the forest Use GPS and basic navigational tools to locate and set up survey stations Record, transcribe and submit accurate survey data and other administrative paperwork Communicate clearly with crew leader and project manager CREW LEADER JOB DUTIES Day-to-day organization and leadership for field crew, including mentoring and coordinating field logistics Communicating information between your field crew and your supervisor, maintaining open communication with your supervisor throughout the field season and providing daily updates Facilitating weekly crew meetings and safety discussions Responsible for composition, corrections, and maintenance of the season survey schedule for crew Submit weekly or bi-weekly updates to your supervisor with all data collected by your crew, ensuring data accuracy Review and submit timesheets and mileage logs for your field crew Conduct marbled murrelet surveys following an established protocol Work independently in the early morning hours (including pre-dawn) in the forest Use GPS and basic navigational tools to locate and set up survey stations Hike off-trail in the dark through steep and strenuous terrain following an existing flag line Record, transcribe and submit accurate survey data All surveyors will be provided with extensive training prior to starting surveys. This work involves a lot of solo driving, hiking through the woods in the dark along pre-determined routes (no trails!), and enjoying regular periods of inclement weather! Typically, housing is provided for our field crews. Occasional camping is often preferred and may be necessary at times. A field vehicle will be provided unless the employee chooses to use a personal vehicle for reimbursement. DESIRED SURVEYOR QUALIFICATIONS Applicants interested in the Surveyor positions should have or be working towards a B.S. degree in wildlife biology (or a closely related field). Previous field experience is preferred, but not required. Additional preferred qualifications include: A strong work ethic, integrity, and accuracy in adhering to scientific protocols and in recording data A strong work ethic, and desire to learn new protocols and explore the Oregon Coast The ability to tackle the rigors of field work, feel comfortable hiking alone each day in strenuous terrain, and willingness to spend long hours in the field and work odd hours, including very early morning. Knowledge of navigating with a compass, GPS and topographic map Working knowledge of western bird identification (or willingness to learn) Flexible, detail-oriented, resourceful, and comfortable working independently while also being part of a larger team A valid state-issued driver’s license with clean driving record and the ability to navigate forest roads of variable condition and operate a 4WD vehicle Applicants must have normal vision and hearing, must submit hearing test results prior to starting work A general appreciation of the natural wonders of the Oregon coast and a willingness to explore them. DESIRED CREW LEADER QUALIFICATIONS Applicants should have a B.S. degree in wildlife biology (or a closely related field). 1-2 previous seasons of field experience are required. Additional preferred qualifications include: Previous experience in a leadership role on a field crew, and/or with any of the duties detailed above. Excellent communication and management skills – ability to maintain a positive attitude and sense of humor, as well as uphold team morale throughout the field season.   2. Assist with managing marbled murrelet surveys in the Coast Range. The successful candidate may be located anywhere in northwestern Oregon, but the ability to work part-time from our Portland office is preferred. LOCATION Oregon SALARY RANGE $3,000 – $3,800 Monthly DATES OF EMPLOYMENT March 01, 2024 – August 31, 2024 ESSENTIAL DUTIES Conduct on-site training and supervising of field crews, including weekly crew meetings Assist in preseason project setup Review survey schedules to ensure strict adherence to protocol Audit field work, data, and other required paperwork Communicating information between field crews and your supervisor, maintaining open communication with project management throughout the field season and providing daily updates. Troubleshoot issues with crew equipment, computer, vehicles, etc.; notify supervisor of continued issues. Conduct surveys for marbled murrelets Likely to assist other projects in their survey efforts for a variety of wildlife species Positions begin in early March and run through August, with the possibility of extension and/or earlier start assisting with pre-season setup depending on project needs. The successful candidate will need to attend a week-long training and certification for marbled murrelet surveys held in Northern California in late April. A company-owned work vehicle will be provided; there may be the option to use a personal vehicle for project activities and be reimbursed on a per-mile basis. The position will require a significant amount of travel and regular camping is expected. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Applicants should have a completed four-year degree in wildlife biology or a closely-related field. A minimum of two years of field experience is required and at least one year of supervisory experience is strongly preferred. Species-specific experience is not required if the applicant has strong field skills, basic bird identification skills, and an interest in avian biology. A portion of the daily work is pre-dawn or post-sunset and can be physically and mentally demanding. An ideal candidate will possess all of the following characteristics: Excellent communication and management skills – ability to maintain a positive attitude and sense of humor, as well as uphold team morale throughout the field season.   3. Turnstone is currently hiring a crew leader and seasonal field biologists to conduct surveys for American three-toed woodpeckers, flammulated and great gray owls, and northern goshawks. These surveys follow exacting protocols, and surveyors will be required to work independently in backcountry areas. Surveys will be conducted during both day and nighttime. Broadcast response surveys will be conducted for all species, with follow-up daytime nest searches completed for all species detections. Housing and a field vehicle will be provided unless the employee chooses to use a personal vehicle for reimbursement. The position involves extensive travel, hiking through forest terrain, and enduring regular periods of inclement weather. The potential need for snowmobiling and/or snowshoeing in the early season may be necessary. Salary Range & Incentives $2,900 - $3,600 Monthly ($17.04 - $22.50 Hourly) - dependent upon experience. Positions start in early-April, dependent upon environmental conditions. There may also be opportunities to work on a variety of other interesting and collaborative field projects related to special-status wildlife species for the right candidate. Self-motivation, enthusiasm for the research goals and learning and/or improving bird identification skills, and an ability to tackle the rigors of field work are a must. A good attitude towards shared field housing situations is necessary. An ideal candidate will possess all of the following characteristics: A consistent track record of working in a safe and efficient manner. Excellent field skills: orienteering, GPS, map-reading skills, hiking alone in backcountry terrain in the dark and/or inclement weather.
