      Location: Livermore, CA
      Country: United States
Last Date to Apply: No value
      Open Until Filled: Yes

Job Description: Great Basin Bird Observatory (GBBO) has immediate openings for one to two part time Field Biologists to conduct avian and bat mortality surveys at a wind project. Surveyors will navigate using a handheld GPS unit and gather field data using ESRI Field Maps. Surveyors will collect fatalities, then process and sample specimens in the lab. Experience with bird and bat identification is helpful, but not necessary. The position is 2 to 4 days (estimated 14 to 35 hours, occasionally more), per week.

There is the possibility to work on other GBBO monitoring projects in CA and NV. There is also a good possibility to work additional hours handling dogs with another organization (Mussel Dogs). If there is interest and sufficient experience, surveyors might be trained to become a Detection K9 handler over the winter. If qualified (which could take 3-4 months), the surveyor would conduct avian and bat searches with canines starting in Spring 2024.

Qualifications: Ideal applicants should have prior Wildlife Biology field experience. Previous dog handling/training experience is a plus. Applicants must be comfortable working with minimal supervision, hiking over uneven ground in hot, cold, muddy, wet, and rainy weather, carrying up to 15 pounds of gear/supplies. Applicants must have their own AWD/4X4 vehicle, but partial time and mileage for travel to the work site, and all mileage on site, will be provided.

Candidates must be within a reasonable weekly commute from Livermore. Housing (Airbnb, etc. - at GBBO’s discretion) provided for some overnight stays. Experience with field data collection using ESRI Field Maps is preferred.

Location: Livermore, California Compensation: $25 to $32 per hour, DOE.

Time Period: January 2024 - December 2024 (minimum 6-month commitment)

To Apply: Please email resume, cover letter, and 3 references to Dr. Murrelet Halterman at MurreletHalterman@gmail.com

Applications will be considered immediately, and accepted until position(s) are filled.
