    • Employer: Berkshire Bird Observatory
      Location: Great Barrington, MA
      Country: United States
      Last Date to Apply: 07/15/2024
      Open Until Filled: Yes

Berkshire Bird Observatory is hiring a songbird bander AND a banding intern for this fall season.  We are looking for people who *love* birds and are eager to improve their banding skills.

Our spring season runs from August 15th through early November.

We will provide great housing in the best region in the US--the Berkshires of western Massachusetts.

We can also provide a modest stipend of $2000 for the Banding Assistant and $1000 for the Banding Intern.

    Qualifications:

    Assistant Bander:

Extracted at least 200 birds (500+ preferred).  Passion for birds and bird banding.  Great attitude and ability to work 7 days/week in field conditions.  Excellent physical condition and ability to hike quickly over terrain and through mud.  Ability to deal with biting insects and (rattle)snakes with good humor!

    Banding Intern:

A love of birds and banding. Ability to work early mornings, potentially 7 day/week. We're looking for someone who doesn't consider bird banding 'work'.  Good ID skills of eastern birds and a desire to learn more about ID and ageing and sexing birds in the hand.  College degree in biological field preferred (though not required). Some field experience and love the outdoors. Great dexterity. Ability to hike quickly over hilly terrain. Ability to deal with biting insects and (rattle)snakes with good humor! Banding experience is great but not required.

We particularly welcome applications from underrepresented groups in science and ecology!

Let us know if you have a car—we need to hire at least one person with reliable transportation. Please email your cover letter and CV as a combined PDF with "BBO fall24 intern (your name)" in the subject line to Ben: ben@berkshirebirds.org.
