    POSITION SUMMARY

    TRC Companies, Inc. is seeking an on-call Wildlife Technician to join our Permitting, Planning and Licensing Practice. This is an on-call position reporting to our Seattle, Washington office primarily supporting field work in Oregon, Idaho, and throughout the western U.S. The position will be primarily a field position, although some office time, either remote or in-office, depending on the technician’s location, will be required for data verification, report writing, and staff meetings.

    The position will work with other environmental resources staff to support TRC’s avian services in the Pacific Northwest region. The successful candidate will execute avian and other biological field studies and prepare technical reports. Duties include following established field protocols to perform avian sampling and field data collection at new and existing sampling plots. 

    The primary focus of this position will be to conduct avian surveys in support of wind energy projects, although there may be opportunities to support a wide variety of projects in the Pacific Northwest area including renewable energy, power transmission, infrastructure utilities, pipelines, mining, and state or federal transportation projects depending on the technician’s availability and skillset.

    We are seeking an enthusiastic avian biologist technician with a strong commitment to client service and technical excellence. It is anticipated that this position will involve 50 - 80 hours a month.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Conduct large and small bird use surveys in accordance with federal and state protocols, including the US Fish and Wildlife Service Wind Energy Guidelines and the Eagle Conservation Plan Guidance.

    Field work at remote project sites.

    Abide by Company policies and procedures.

    Other duties and special projects as assigned.

    FIELD WORK

    Field work is expected and will include:

    • Maintaining safety awareness and practices
    • Extensive 4x4 driving on unmaintained roads;
    • Navigating off-trail to sampling sites;
    • Establishing sampling plots and transects;
    • Collecting biological data;
    • Taking photo-points.
    • Entering data into electronic data forms and post-processing

     

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience, education, or a combination of both in wildlife ecology and/or ecology to meet the following:
    • At least two years of experience conducting and reporting ecological field work with an emphasis on avian species
    • Demonstrated ability to identify rangeland and forest bird species by vocalizations, field marks, and long distance flight patterns, particularly in the Intermountain West and interior Pacific Northwest
    • Excellent digital data collection skills and work with GPS and ArcGIS equipment
    • Clear and concise technical writing and written and verbal communication skills
    • The position will entail travel in the field; therefore, the candidate must be willing and physically able to travel and work outdoors in rough and remote terrain under challenging environmental conditions
    • Must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record
    • Must be able to drive 4WD trucks in difficult and remote off-road terrain;
    • Successful completion of a background check and drug screen
    • A commitment to safety;

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree in wildlife ecology, ecology, or other natural resources. At least 15 semester hours in wildlife ecology
    • Familiarity with other types of wildlife or ecoregions for field surveys
    • Able to identify intermountain west and interior northwest plants and habitat types
    • Experience with renewable energy permitting requirements in the intermountain west and interior northwest states with respect to avian and other species
    • Comfortable driving 4WD trucks with trailers and ability to navigate trailers in and out of difficult places
    • Comfortable flying in aircraft following low-level, turbulent flight paths over varying elevation terrain
    • Comfortable driving all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in difficult and remote off-road terrain

     

    In accordance with local law, the following compensation range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition: $21-24/hr. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors.
