The Avian Care Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Rehabilitation Center
Director with all aspects of daily operations, including patient care, training and
supervision of interns and volunteers, record keeping and facility maintenance.
Applicants should possess interest in working in a team environment and be able to
multi-task with professionalism and flexibility. They will be working with volunteers,
interns, partner organizations and the general public. A passion for songbirds and
wildlife conservation is an essential element of this job.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
● Responsible for physical exams, triage, fluid therapy, pain management and
euthanasia.
● Responsible for documenting the weights of birds in preparation for their
movement within the facility.
● Responsible for ensuring that patient charts are maintained in a complete,
accurate and timely manner and that the charts “follow the birds.”
● Responsible for determining the diet and feeding intervals for each patient.
● Responsible for ensuring that all medications are being administered in strict
accordance with industry best practices.
● Responsible for supervising Center volunteers and interns in ER and throughout
the Center and responding to questions and assisting in further training.
● Responsible for maintaining and coordinating an adequate inventory of food and
seed for bird diets.
● Responsible for coordinating miscellaneous supplies for the smooth operation of
the Center including laundry, cleaning supplies and paper products.
● Responsible for monitoring the levels of all medical supplies, including lactated
ringers, euthanasia meds, antibiotics, eye ointments and drops, and pain
medications.
● Other duties and responsibilities as determined by the Rehabilitation Center
Director and/or Executive Director from time to time.
Qualifications
● Able to work calmly and efficiently in busy, high-intensity situations.
● Ability to endure long workdays in a physically and emotionally demanding
setting while maintaining focus, accuracy, energy and physical activities
required by the job.
● Experience training and supervising volunteers, preferably in an animal care
setting, is desirable.
● Interest and/or knowledge of local native songbirds.
● Good written and verbal communication skills.
● Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or
oral instructions.
● Computer literacy & ability to learn our medical database system.
● Strong organizational and time management skills.
● Some college with a background in wildlife biology or related animal science
is desirable.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described herein represent essential components of the job of
working in wildlife rehabilitation. They include but are not limited to the following: able to
lift or move up to 50 lbs, stand on a concrete floor for up to 8 hours a day, climb stairs,
kneel, crouch, stoop, crawl and reach to arm’s length. Must possess the physical
dexterity and coordination to use hands and fingers to handle, feel and feed tiny fragile
patients as small as 2-3 grams. Our staff is routinely exposed to chemicals, allergens
such as dust and dander, zoonotic diseases, frightened animals, inclement weather
conditions and noise.
Position Information
This position is full-time 40 hours per week. Shifts are 8 hours and include weekends,
holidays and evenings. Salary range - $12-$14/hour. The position is non-exempt and
includes 10 days of PTO annually. Due to the nature of our busy time, time off is not
allowed from May 1 through August 15 except under emergency circumstances.
