    PhD IN AVIAN ECOLOGY IN AUSTRALIA

    Seeking highly qualified and motivated students to work on two field-based research projects.

    1)      The function of female song in Grey Fantails. This project will test competing hypotheses for the evolution of sexual differences by investigating selection on male and female song. There is scope to adapt the project to the prospective students interests.

    2)      Waterbird ecosystem services. This project will determine what ecosystem services waterbirds provide to farmers, investigate farmers perspectives toward waterbirds, and how environmental contaminants affect waterbird populations. There is scope to adapt the project to the prospective students interests, and access to a substantial radio tracking data base. This project will be run in partnership with CSIRO.

     

    RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia) offers Scholarships for international and domestic students and we can discuss other funding opportunities. The scholarship provides a tuition waiver, living stipend for 3 years (~$33,000 AUD / year, tax-free), and no teaching requirements. Applicants should have completed a MSc degree or equivalent (with a substantial thesis component) in a relevant discipline, and students with published papers will be more competitive.

     

    We are looking for enthusiastic students with a passion for field work and evolutionary ecology. Useful skills include experience with one or more of the following: bird-banding, behavioural observations, nest searching, recording and analysis of bird song, or other ornithological skills. The

     

    Prerequisites

    -          Applicants should have completed a MSc degree or equivalent (with a substantial thesis component) in a relevant discipline.

    -          Strong field skills

    -          Valid drives license and ability to drive manual transmission (or learn before starting).

    -          be able to tolerate demanding schedules and field conditions
