"Sustaining America’s Fisheries for the Future Act of 2024" introduced

Recommended Posts

Recently, the "Sustaining America’s Fisheries for the Future Act of 2024" was introduced in the US Congress. The bill, which would reauthorize and update the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (the primary law governing U.S. marine fisheries that has been in place since 1976 and last reauthorized in 2006), would also provide important protections for seabirds.

Provisions in the bill would (1) change the process currently use to include accounting for the needs of seabirds and other predators when deciding how many forage fish can be caught, (2) factor climate change into the fisheries management process, (3) help to prevent seabirds and other wildlife from becoming hooked or entangled by fishing gear, and (4) increase protections for coastal habitats like seagrass beds that serve as nurseries and feeding grounds for both birds and fish.

You can learn more about the bill from the National Audubon Society or the Ocean Conservancy.
