Laura Bies
The Biodiversity Collections Network, along with the U.S. Culture Collection Network, released a Special Report in the journal BioScience, which provides guidance on implementing a specimen management plan requirement for research proposals that involve collecting or generating specimens. Such as requirement is now required for National Science Foundation projects. In the article, authors recommend that funding agencies require specimens management plans (SMPs) for biological specimens collected or generated during government-funded research, and further recommend that those SMPs provide detailed information regarding the requirements for collection, digitization, curation, long-term maintenance, and funding of accessioned specimens as a part of all research projects in which specimens of any type are generated or collected.
