Student Presentation Awards

There will be a single award program for presentations (contributed talks and contributed posters) delivered by student authors. Policies and procedures are under development; they are likely to include the following elements:

  • The student must be the first and presenting author to be eligible.
  • The student must be an active member for 2012 of one or more of the NAOC-V participating societies to be eligible.
  • The student must submit an application for eligibility on or before the submission deadline for abstracts for the Scientific Program. The deadline for both will be 29 Feb 2012. The application deadline will be earlier (15 Jan 2012) for Student Travel Awards. (Note: these deadlines were revised in Oct 2011.)
  • The Student Presentation Award Committee will probably use the applications as the basis for selecting a subset of students as finalists whose presentations will be evaluated in Vancouver for award consideration. The committee plans to inform students not selected as finalists prior to the conference that their presentations will not receive further consideration. However, the committee is not likely to make these determinations prior to the abstract deadline.
  • Students who will have received their PhD prior to the conference will be eligible to apply for the award program as long as they will not have received their PhD prior to the application deadline.
  • The committee encourages students to apply for award consideration if they have a complete research story to present. The work to be presented could derive from undergraduate research, a Masters thesis, or a doctoral Dissertation. Students who plan to present work that is still in progress associated with their current educational program are unlikely to be selected as finalists; the committee encourages those students to defer applying for award consideration until future meetings of the societies participating in NAOC-V.
