Even if traveling from the United States, and even if traveling by car, you must have a valid passport to enter Canada.

 

You also need a valid passport to return to the United States.

US citizens traveling by car only may use a US Passport Card instead of a US Passport. It is cheaper and I've heard it takes less time to process (i.e. for you to receive it). The Passport Card cannot be used for travel by air, however.
