    Job Description:

    The San Luis Obispo Coast District of California State Parks is seeking applicants for a Senior Park Aide.  Responsibilities include data collection and reporting related to the federally threatened western snowy plover, monarch butterflies, elephant seals, shoulderband snails, and other sensitive species; and habitat restoration activities including exotic plant removal and native plant propagation, out planting and establishment. Additional responsibilities involve training lower-level seasonal employees and working with the public as a State Park representative and with an interdisciplinary team.

    Specific duties include monitoring the breeding activities of the western snowy plover using ArcGIS applications, fence and sign installation, public outreach, report writing, exotic plant removal via hand, chemical, or mechanical means and native plant collection, propagation, transplanting, maintenance, and watering, and other duties as necessary.

    Training will be provided, and activities will involve driving a vehicle.  Typical working hours are 7:00am – 3:30pm weekdays depending on operational needs but may also work nights and weekends depending on program/project needs.  The positions will start mid-February and continue through October 2023.  Starting pay is $17.49/hr.  Housing is not available.

    Qualifications:

    Must be in good physical condition – position requires walking up to six miles per day in soft sand.  A valid driver's license and good driving record are required.  The applicant must also possess the ability to collect data with strong attention to detail; a positive attitude in adverse environmental conditions such as wind; patience and focus to quietly observe birds; ability to work independently and in a group.
