    Description

    SEASONAL BURROWING OWL BIOLOGIST needed for Burrowing Owl monitoring, management, and research on Lemoore Naval Air Base in central California.  The successful applicant will be supervised by a project manager and project investigator.  Primary duties may include: 1) conducting standardized surveys for Burrowing Owls, 2) monitoring active Burrowing Owl nests with regular visits and through the use of motion-activated cameras placed at nest entrances, 3) trapping and banding adult and nestling Burrowing Owls, 4) reviewing and transcribing camera images from Burrowing Owl nests, 5) resighting banded burrowing owls, 6) data entry (excel, ArcGIS pro, Survey 123, ArcGIS FieldMaps), 7) assessing and repairing artificial burrows, and 😎 vehicle and equipment maintenance.

    This position will be full time beginning in March through July/August 2024 (exact dates somewhat flexible).  Housing near the base will be provided.  A project vehicle will be provided for work use.

    Qualifications

    Required

    -excellent physical condition, willing to work long and unusual hours (including early morning and night) in the field under hot, cold, dry, wet, windy, dusty, and other adverse weather conditions

    -excellent attention to detail

    -able to pass a background check to work on military installations

    -in possession of a valid driver’s license.

    -good vision and hearing

    -experience surveying for birds

    -willingness to work near an active runway and drive on an airfield

    -ability to work independently

    Preferred but not required

    -B.S. or M.S. in related field

    -experience monitoring bird nests

    -experience using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS fieldmaps, survey 123, excel, R, or other computer programs

    -experience resighting birds and using optics (binoculars, spotting scope)

    -experience using trail cameras and processing photos

    -experience handling, capturing, banding, and processing birds

    -carpentry skills
