Job description: Save Our Springs is hiring 2 field assistants to conduct point count surveys in central Texas from late March – early May 2024 (~6 weeks). Surveys will be a combination of roadside and off-road transects. Survey locations will be spread across central Texas and technicians will be expected to move to new locations throughout the season. Housing will be provided in hotels or Airbnbs, some camping may be required. Field days will include arriving at points around sunrise and surveying along point transects through the morning and entering data daily in the afternoon. Surveys are conducted under ideal weather conditions, so applicants must be flexible with their work schedule and expect to survey every morning with correct weather conditions.

Qualifications: Applicants need prior bird surveying experience, and preferably some experience with distance measurement in wooded terrain. Applicants should be comfortable navigating independently over rough, wooded terrain and with using a compass, GPS, and aerial photos. Applicants must be physically fit (terrain is often steep and challenging and you must be able to travel between points quickly), have excellent hearing and color vision, and be able to tolerate heat, humidity, and poisonous plants and animals.

Compensation: $4000 stipend for the season plus mileage reimbursement and housing expenses will be provided. Technicians will need to use reliable personal vehicle and ideally supply own high-quality binoculars.

To apply: Send resume, cover letter detailing relevant experience, and contact info for 3 references by 2/24/2024 to Jennifer Reidy at jennifer.reidy AT gmail.com; please include “Point Counter Application” as subject.  Positions will be offered as qualified candidates apply.
