The successful applicant will assist with passive acoustic monitoring of bird communities in Southern California. The primary duties of the position include placing autonomous recording units in trees and retrieving them on a precise schedule, navigating to way points with a handheld GPS device, operating a 4WD vehicle on rugged roads, making independent decisions in the field regarding safety and scientific protocols, and assisting with data management (e.g. ensuring that sound files are named properly so they can be linked to the correct location). Will follow strict survey protocols to ensure data organization, including keeping track of multiple sets of data forms and memory cards. Assist with data management by copying audio files onto multiple backup locations, digitizing data forms and maintaining equipment. The applicant must have a valid driver’s license and be able to hike intermediate distances off-trail through rugged terrain while carrying equipment (~20lbs).
