    The Wetlands Institute, located in Stone Harbor, New Jersey, is seeking qualified applicants to assist with breeding season studies of wading birds, beach-nesting birds, and secretive-marsh birds for our Coastal Bird Program. Primary responsibilities include assisting with nest monitoring, point count surveys, capture and banding, acoustic monitoring, and habitat use surveys, as well as with other surveys and tasks as assigned. The Research Assistant will be responsible for recording detailed observations and data in the field, data entry and management, and maintenance of equipment.

    This is a temporary, hourly position (approx. 40 hrs/week) that will include regular early morning, weekend, and holiday hours. The position will require walking long distances in marshes, carrying equipment (<30 lbs), boat and kayak travel, and tolerating exposure to variable and sometimes adverse weather and environmental conditions (mud, wind, rain, heat, biting insects).

    Applicants should have previous experience monitoring nesting birds, following protocols, and collecting detailed data. Applicants should have bird identification experience or interest in improving skills, and be able to work effectively alone or in small groups. Prefer candidates with a B.S. in wildlife biology, environmental science, or other related fields. 

    The position is approximately 15 weeks, April – July, with some flexibility for start and end dates. Candidates should be available for the duration of the position. Salary is dependent on experience. Housing is not provided, and Research Assistants must live within daily commuting distance. A valid driver’s license and personal transportation is required. Reimbursement for most project-related travel will be provided. Final candidate will be subject to a background check.
