    Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium-size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for a temporary full-time, Biological Field Technician near Deposit, New York.

    Key details:

    • Start Date: May 15, 2024
    • End Date: July 20, 2024
    • Compensation: $19.25 -24.75/hr DOE
    • Schedule: Up to 30 hours per week
    • Additional Details: The schedule is anticipated to consist of 3-4 days of work per week during the survey period. A work vehicle will be provided by WEST. Alternatively, the selected candidate can use a suitable personal vehicle and be reimbursed for mileage at the current

     

    Job Description:

    The successful candidate for this position will be able to identify all breeding bird species found in Upstate New York by sight and sound; work independently and communicate and coordinate effectively with WEST supervisors and clients; and have experience working outdoors in extreme weather conditions.

     

    Responsibilities include:

    • Walk transects to record breeding bird observations.
    • Map bird locations.
    • Describe bird behaviors.
    • Follow protocols to collect quality data; and
    • Upload observation forms electronically.

     

    This is a general description of the functions for this position and is not inclusive of all the duties that may be associated with this position.

    Job Requirements

     

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology or equivalent field preferred; however, undergraduates and enthusiastic workers are encouraged to apply.
    • Proficient in identification of breeding birds found in Upstate New York; candidates experienced in identification of breeding birds by sight and sound and recording behavioral observations will be given preference.
    • Skilled use of topographic maps, GPS units, and other field equipment is required.
    • Must be able to work independently and interact effectively with project managers, co-workers, and landowners.
    • Must be able to cope with summer temperatures.
    • Must be equipped with and provide own suitable footwear (boots), binoculars, and proper clothing for extreme weather conditions.
    • Precise and thorough data collection will be essential.
    • Technicians will be required to follow all safety protocols for WEST and clients when on site.

     

    After an offer of employment is made, the candidate must successfully pass a pre- employment background check, drug screening, and DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company.  A valid driver’s license will be required.
