    Job Description:

    The Alabama Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit at Auburn University is seeking Avian Point Count/Vegetation Sampling Technicians (2) for a multi-species inventory and conservation project on selected state-owned lands within Alabama. Primary responsibilities will include conducting avian point counts and vegetation sampling at pre-determined points on various wildlife management areas throughout the state of Alabama. Other duties will include data entry, database management, and maintenance of field equipment and vehicles. Candidates must be prepared and able to work under challenging environmental conditions, which include exposure to elements such as heat, humidity, and the presence of hazardous wildlife and insects. Technicians will be provided with temporary housing accommodations, which may include hotels, motels, Airbnbs, and/or field housing during the entire duration of the field season.   

     

    Qualifications:

    Ideal candidates should be pursuing or hold a Bachelor's degree in a biology-related field, display high motivation, and have experience in conducting field surveys. Proficiency in GPS navigation, possession of a valid driver's license, and the ability to work in challenging environmental conditions are essential. Candidates should be comfortable carrying light field equipment for extended periods. Candidates with a positive attitude, effective communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are desired. 

    Preferred Skills:

    • Proficiency in identification of 150+ southeastern birds by sight and sound
    • Experience with southeastern tree/shrub identification to genus and species 
    • Experience using vegetation measuring equipment (hypsometer, clinometer, jim-cruz-all, tape measure, DBH tape, etc.) 
    • Experience conducting vegetation sampling protocols

    These are 3-month appointments from April 29th-July 26th (start date on May 6th for current/graduating students). Candidates skilled in small mammal live-trapping and identification and Anabat and camera trap deployment may be considered for up to a 4-month extension.

    Salary/Benefits: $18/hour, work trucks provided to and from field sites, and free housing provided during field season. (We cannot provide healthcare benefits due to the temporary duration of the position)
