Multiple field technicians [5] needed for a research project studying bird and vegetation responses to different cattle grazing methods in the Centennial Valley, southwest Montana. The crew will work from late May to the end of July with some flexibility (but must be available by May 27). Salary will be $18-20 per hour, DOE. Work will primarily involve collecting data from 1) bird sampling by sight and sound (point counts), and 2) vegetation sampling using standardized techniques. In addition, technicians will help implement various grazing treatments (setting up and repairing electric fences, moving cattle, etc.), and other duties including data entry/proofing and basic camp/vehicle maintenance. Previous avian point count and vegetation survey experience is desired, but other field experience on rangelands may be suitable. A knowledge of western birds by sight and sound is ideal. Ability to get along well with other crewmembers (we will work in pairs), landowners, and agency staff, and maintaining a positive attitude through logistical and other challenges will be important to succeed in this project. The field site is extremely remote and spans a stunning high elevation valley (~7000 ft asl) in an arid landscape that includes riparian meadows, grasslands, and sagebrush-steppe habitats within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, which hosts a healthy abundance of wildlife. Working in this environment will be extremely rewarding for those who are willing to endure physical and mental challenges such as hiking 5-10 miles per day over rough terrain starting before sunrise, below freezing morning temperatures, mosquitos, and a rustic lifestyle. Private tents and cots will be provided to camp for the duration of the season and there will be a larger canvas tent to use as a common space. Applicants should expect to live and work in a beautiful but very remote location, with limited cell coverage, grizzly bears, and other potential hazards. Position will be open until filled.

To apply, please email a *single* file with 1) cover letter, 2) resume/cv, and 3) 3 email and phone number for 3 professional references to Adam Mitchell at adam.mitchell2@montana.edu . ***EMAIL MUST INCLUDE “CV 2024 APPLICATION” IN THE SUBJECT LINE***
