    • Employer: University of New Hampshire/SHARP
      Location: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine
      Country: United States
      Last Date to Apply: 03/15/2024
      Open Until Filled: Yes

The Saltmarsh Habitat and Avian Research Program (SHARP) is looking for 4 BIRD BANDERS and 2 CREW LEADERS to conduct tidal marsh bird research along the New England coast; one crew in the Great Marsh of New Hampshire/Massachusetts and one crew in southern Maine!

SHARP is a collaborative group of researchers studying tidal marsh bird ecology and conservation across the Northeast (www.tidalmarshbirds.org) with emphasis placed on Saltmarsh Sparrow, Seaside Sparrow, Nelson’s Sparrow, Willet and Clapper Rail.

Successful candidates will join one of two field crews assessing demographic rates of tidal marsh sparrows.  Technicians will work together to conduct point counts, transect surveys, mist netting, banding, nest searching and vegetation surveys under direction of the crew leaders. The crews will collect a multitude of data and work with local partners, making it an excellent opportunity to expand your field biology skill set and meet professional wildlife biologists.

Ideal applicants will have sufficient mist-netting and banding experience to operate independently.  Applicants for the crew leader positions should have a demonstrated ability to supervise technicians in the field and sufficient banding experience to obtain a federal banding sub-permit.

Strong organizational skills, a valid US driver’s license with a clean driving record, and the ability to adjust to varying schedules throughout the field season are a must.  An undying love of the marsh and fieldwork and the ability to work well with a large variety of biological professionals at universities, state and federal agencies is also a plus!

Housing and vehicles will be provided for all positions.  Salary ranges from $760 to $840 per week, depending on position and experience.

Positions begin in mid-late May 2024 and conclude early-mid September 2024; exact dates are crew dependent.

To apply, please send a resume and cover letter with three references to Liz Tymkiw at info@tidalmarshbirds.org.  Jobs open until filled.  Please include “Sparrow Demographics” in subject line of the email.   Those applying for crew lead positions use “Lead - Sparrow Demographics 2024” as the subject line.
