    Summary:
    This position is responsible for assisting with marine ecology research projects at the Alaska SeaLife Center.

    Education/Experience Requirements:
    Bachelor of Science degree in biology, zoology, wildlife ecology, or related field required, with minimum of one year of work experience in a related field. Experience with work in a laboratory setting is required and experience in experimental research in controlled laboratory conditions desired. Proficiency in computer skills including Microsoft Office is required, and basic knowledge about statistical analysis of data is preferred. Experience with field work, including Alaska, is preferred. Knowledge and experience in bird surveys and bird identification skills is preferred, with identification skills of Alaskan marine birds desired.

    Primary Responsibilities:
    1. Functions as a technician for assigned research projects conducted at the Alaska SeaLife Center.
    2. Conducts laboratory benchwork, and assists with routine maintenance of research laboratory space, including sample collection, laboratory analysis, and data entry. Ensures that appropriate record keeping is maintained including sample tracking records and laboratory data.
    3. Participates and assists with marine bird field research projects, including seasonal and year-round vessel based surveys.
    4. Assist with operating remote observation systems to monitor productivity and other breeding parameters in seabirds. Assists with logistics of gear maintenance and set up, conducts observations, and summarizes and analyzes data from remote data acquisition systems.
    5. Assists with field work as assigned, potentially involving field work at remote locations in Alaska.
    6. Assists with experimental research projects including collection of behavioral and physiological data from marine birds.
    7. Assists with the procurement, inventory, and maintenance of equipment and supplies to be used in research projects. Assist with logistics for research projects.
    8. Ensures accurate record keeping for research projects. Maintains data records in accordance with the ASLC protocol requirements. Summarizes data and assists with data analysis and data management.
    9. Assists with preparing and presenting research data as assigned, including reports, presentations, and scientific publications.
    10. Works with other departments to communicate research to Alaska SeaLife Center audiences and to engage non-scientists with marine health research.
    11. Supervises interns and volunteers as assigned. Assigns and checks work, establishes schedules, sets deadlines, delegates authority, and sets and reviews performance goals.
    12. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
    13. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
    14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Other Skills and Abilities:
    Organizational skills for data collection. Ability to multi-task while working independently, ability to prioritize the importance of proper, accurate data collection. Comfortable working many hours a day in a laboratory or field setting. Ability to interface with researchers as required. Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels, be organized, self-motivated, and possess a strong desire to see the completion of projects. Computer skills including Experience with R and spatial data software desired. Knowledge of basic research methods, data collection techniques, and database management.
