    The mission of the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native and migratory wild birds that have been harmed or displaced, to provide or locate a humane shelter for those birds that cannot be released, and to educate the public towards the importance of coexistence with all wild bird species. 

    Job Title: Outreach Coordinator

    Salary Range: $35,000 - $40,000

    Supervises: Education Interns & Volunteers

    Job Summary: 

    The Outreach Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of education programs, outreach efforts, and volunteer coordination for the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center in Tavernier, FL. Education efforts include field trips, in-classroom visits, afterschool programs, camps, birthday parties, and all other public educational events. Outreach/community efforts include maintaining social media platforms, managing the volunteer program, attending festivals, tabling events, expos, and other non-profit related events. This position also includes expanding the ambassador bird program, to include avian training in cooperation with other staff. 

    The Outreach Coordinator position is a full-time, salaried position and includes some holidays, weekends, evening, and event hours that may exceed a 40-hour work week. Typically, the Outreach Coordinator works a 5-day, 40-hour work week. 

    Essential Duties/Responsibilities: 

    • Manage all aspects of the volunteer program, including onboarding, scheduling, orientations, training in coordination with hospital staff, etc. Act as the point of contact for on-site volunteers and volunteer groups at both the hospital and the sanctuary.
    • Manage social media platforms to include creating/compiling content, scheduling posts, responding to direct messages/comments, creating online fundraisers, etc. 
    • Assist Executive Director with fundraising efforts & event planning.
    • Work with hospital staff to oversee the care and training of avian ambassadors. Maintain detailed records of avian ambassador files. 
    • Develop and implement educational programs for visiting groups and local events. Coordinate with event personnel to sign up for and attend community events as a representative of the FKWBC. 
    • Develop programs and workshops to integrate environmental/wildlife concepts into established school curricula. Integrate CPALMS standards with program development. 
    • Maintain outreach program log, including program name, dates, type, and participant numbers. 
    • Give guided tours of the hospital and sanctuary to interns, volunteers, and guests, as scheduled. 
    • Coordinate public bird releases in cooperation with hospital staff. 
    • Assist Operations Director with the maintenance and annual reporting of education collections to ensure compliance with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
    • Assist upper management with managing the giftshop to include inventory, reordering, shipping orders, greeting guests, etc.
    • Respond to the public’s curiosity about the organization (i.e. the mission, sanctuary information, bird advice, etc.). 
    • Network with other environmental education organizations to form collaborative efforts. 
    • Participate in developing content for FKWBC’s ‘Footprints’ newsletter. 
    • Coordinate the Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program on behalf of FKWBC. 
    • Maintain and dictate intern house cleanliness and supplies. Identify and communicate issues and repairs to the Operations Director and be available on-site for after-hours emergencies.

    Minimum Requirements: 

    • Ability to pick up and carry 50 pounds, including in and out of vehicles. 
    • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors despite poor weather conditions. 
    • Ability to adapt to a changing work schedule to accommodate events that occur on weekends.
    • Possess a bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences, education, or a similar field. 
    • At least two years experience in environmental education that includes avian programs. 
    • At least one year experience in training and working with live program animals and possess the ability to glove train non-releasable birds of prey to be used for education programs. 
    • Extensive and growing knowledge of ecological principles and ability to quickly master South Florida ecology. 
    • Extensive knowledge of social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).
    • Ability to teach to people of all ages. 
    • Thrives in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment. 
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
    • Possess great time management skills with the ability to plan, organize, and multitask.
    • Self-motivated, confident, and disciplined with an excellent work ethic and positive attitude.
    • Will respect FKWBC property as smoke- and drug-free zones. 
    • Valid driver's license and clean driving record. 

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • M.S. or M.A. in biology, ecology, or a related field.
    • Prior work experience in a wildlife rehabilitation facility.
    • Social media management & graphic design experience.
    • Basic experience capturing, handling, and restraining wild animals, preferably birds.
    • Ability to learn and understand basic medical terminology, avian physiology, and avian anatomy.
    • Experience managing volunteers.
