    Seeking Data Manager

    Status: Full-time position

    Reports To: Senior Geospatial Scientist and Technology Director

    Location: Portland, ME

    Position Overview:

    Biodiversity Research Institute (BRI) is seeking to hire a full time Data Manager with the ability to manage, develop, and maintain BRI’s ecological data, the backbone of our research and conservation efforts. This position oversees data storage methods and databases and database retrieval systems. Data will vary across the organization and include contaminants results, wildlife telemetry data, avian productivity data, avian banding data, and many other data types. The Data Manager supports the organization in achieving its mission by overseeing all aspects of the data life cycle from collection, storage, QA/QC to long term storage and retrieval. The successful candidate will develop procedures, policies, and controls to manage and disseminate data throughout the organization. This position will work collaboratively across BRI.

    Position Responsibilities:

    • Manages the administration of BRI’s database including assisting in the design, maintenance and implementation of the systems that manage an internal database;

    • Analyzes the organization's data storage and database needs and efficiencies and develops a long-term strategy for data storage and growth;

    • Works to migrate data to future platform(s) as determined with the Senior Geospatial Scientist;

    • Reorganizes the data as needed to be more efficient or spatially aware; 

    • Creates standardized data entry and QA/QC forms and templates as needed;

    • Conducts QA/QC on existing and future data;

    • Provides training to staff regarding what and how to work with the data;

    • Works with staff to generate queries (spatial or otherwise) as needed for analysis; and

    • Any other duties as assigned by the Senior Geospatial Scientist or Executive Director.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required:

    • Master’s degree or advanced in information technology and/or training in related wildlife field having at least 4 years of experience handling data and/or databases;

    • Basic data analysis skills;

    • Other scripting skills are very desirable, such as Python, R, or other;

    • Knowledge and skills in GIS are highly desirable, including development of ArcGIS Online or open-sourced databases and data portals;

    • Leadership and problem-solving skills when troubleshooting data issues;

    • Demonstrate a high level of organization, attention to detail, initiative, interpersonal and oral and written communication skills;

    • Demonstrate ability and interest in collaborating with other scientists and stakeholders;

    • Strong interest in working in wildlife conservation and research with public and private entities.

    Other Requirements:

    The successful candidate must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States, a valid driver’s license as well as proof of full vaccination against COVID-19.

    Location:

    This is a full-time salaried position based at BRI’s Portland, Maine office.
