John Wingfield, who has served as NSF Assistant Director for Biology, addresses the basic differences between wildlife biology and biomedical research in this address given at a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research. Wingfield, who is an ornithologist, has stepped down from his NSF post. During his tenure, he led the effort by NSF’s BIO division to recognize Guidelines to the Use of Wild Birds in Research and the animal welfare guidelines published by other taxonomic societies.
