Ornithology Exchange (brought to you by the Ornithological Council)
  • Pip, pip, hooray! Say goodbye to that apostrophe!

    Fern Davies
    • American Ornithologists' Union. It is a plural possessive. How many times have you seen that apostrophe placed before the "s"?

      No more!

Last night's meeting of the fellows of the AOU was the last meeting of the fellows of the AOU. The fellows voted to merge with the Cooper Ornithological Society and once the merger is complete, the new society will be called the American Ornithological Society.

Over a century of ornithology for both societies comes to an end as a bright new era begins.

We from the apostrophe'd community can never celebrate the loss of one of our own. I, for one, will miss the plural possessive in the AOU.
