  • OC to ask DOI to exempt MBTA permits program from shutdown

The MBTA permits program has a funding source independent of federal appropriations and should be exempted from the shutdown.

By law, your MBTA permits fees are returned to the Division of Migratory Bird Management rather than going to the general treasury. Thus, the permit program has a separate source of revenue independent of federal appropriations. The Ornithological Council will communicate with DOI officials and members of Congress to ask that the permits program be allowed to operate during the shutdown.

The IC made the same request during the most recent prior shutdown but fortunately, that shutdown ended only a few days later.

Unfirtunately, this request will not apply to the Bird Banding Lab, which is not free-funded.
