This four-day symposium is designed to address contemporary topics in animal acoustic communication across a wide range of taxa, including arthropods, lizards and amphibians, as well as birds, fish and terrestrial and marine mammals. We have an extraordinary slate of keynote and invited speakers, covering a broad range of topics and taxa. Please plan to attend, participate and share your work. Pre-Symposium Workshop: The scientific program of the 4th International Symposium will be preceded on Monday, 17 July 2017, by a half-day workshop in which key questions related to The Impact of Anthropogenic Noise on Animal Acoustic Communication will be discussed. The workshop is free to all registrants. Call for Abstracts: We invite you to participate in the 4th International Symposium. The abstract submission period is now open and those interested in giving an oral or poster presentation must submit an abstract by May 1st, 2017. Guest posted a topic in Workshops & Short Courses
*** ENROLLMENT SPACE IS STILL AVAILABLE *** The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is offering back-to-back workshops on the recording and analysis of wildlife sounds in June 2016 at San Francisco State University’s Sierra Nevada Field Campus in the Tahoe National Forest near Sattley, CA. The station, located at 6,000 feet elevation amid Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forest, affords a wide range of recording opportunities and challenges in spectacular surroundings. The Sound Recording Workshop will be held 11–18 June; the Sound Analysis Workshop will be held 18–21 June. Participants can sign up for either workshop separately or both together. SOUND RECORDING OVERVIEW Learn state-of-the-art techniques for recording and analyzing the sounds of wildlife with experts from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Macaulay Library. The week-long workshop, designed to take you from novice to capable field recordist, covers the selection and application of audio recorders and microphones, recording theory, metering, field recording techniques, and documentation for sound recordings. Each day is comprised of several hours of field recording in the morning and lectures/discussions in the afternoon. The recording course includes an introduction to visualizing sounds and making basic measurements with Raven Pro software. Your instructors will be Greg Budney, of the Macaulay Library, Bill McQuay of the Lab's Multimedia Program, Randolph Little, a Laboratory Associate with extensive recording experience, and Ashik Rahaman of the Lab’s Bioacoustics Research Program. SOUND ANALYSIS OVERVIEW The Sound Analysis Workshop will delve deeper into topics such as the conceptual foundations of spectrogram analysis (no math required!), optimizing spectrogram parameters, robust measurements, automated signal detection, quantitative comparison of spectrograms, and advanced tips and tricks to make working with Raven Pro easier and more efficient. Sessions will include lectures, demos, and hands-on exercises using the participants’ own recordings. Your instructors will be Russ Charif and Ashik Rahaman, both of the Cornell Bioacoustics Research Program. SOUND RECORDING ENROLLMENT INFORMATION The workshop fee is $1195 (includes tuition, class materials, a 1-year student license for Raven Pro (renewable as long as you are a student), ground transportation from/to Reno airport, food, and lodging). Enrollment is primarily based on a first-come first-served basis, with first consideration to students and researchers. Enrollment is limited to 20 participants.
