Title: Private Lands Wildlife Forester Supervisor: Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture Coordinator Location: Franklin or Petersburg, WV Salary: $46,969 per year Application Deadline: May 15, 2024 Term of Position: Approx. January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2029; extension pending additional funding Position Summary: American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is seeking to fill one Private Lands Wildlife Forester position in eastern West Virginia to work effectively with private forest landowners and local partners in West Virginia to implement sustainable forest management on private lands following ecologically based silviculture and best management practices for locally occurring priority wildlife species. The wildlife forester will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of biologists, foresters, soil conservationists, and others working across West Virginia to address resource concerns and enhance forests on non-industrial private forestland. This project is being coordinated by Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture (AMJV) staff, who are employees of ABC. Supervision, daily direction, training, and support will be provided by AMJV and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) staff. The field foresters and associated activities are supported with funds from NRCS and ABC. Primary Duties: Work with AMJV staff, NRCS, WV Division of Forestry, WV Division of Natural Resources, and other partners to: 1. Promote forest management for priority wildlife species identified in the WV State Wildlife Action Plan by following best management practices. 2. Identify and directly contact private landowners with forest management opportunities. 3. Conduct site visits to private forest owners and provide technical assistance including the development of conservation plans. 4. Work with NRCS staff to facilitate private landowner enrollment in NRCS programs. 5. Identify additional landowners and future sites for forest implementation or habitat restoration on private lands. 6. Complete all aspects of forest habitat management including: o Layout and mark boundaries of project area(s). o Survey project area boundaries and roads using GPS unit, then use collected data to produce necessary maps using computer programs. o Collect and use data to prepare the following preparation documents: a. Conduct forest inventory using industry software as needed b. Prescription Narrative c. Evaluate potential impacts to sensitive species o Apply the silvicultural prescription through timber marking. o Meet with prospective contractors to tour the project area(s). o Oversee the project implementation to ensure prescriptions are followed o Recommend and implement practices to control invasive and problematic species. Other duties will include: · Promote young forest management following the Golden-winged Warbler Best Management Practices to private landowners as part of the NRCS Working Lands for Wildlife program. · Promote forest management following the Cerulean Warbler Forest Management Guidelines to private landowners, foresters and wildlife habitat practitioners · Monitor and track project activities using an electronic database and GIS to ensure proper reporting for assessing success, and possibly assist with focal species monitoring pre- and post-treatment. · Assist resource professionals with development of site specific forest and grassland management plans according to NRCS practice standards and focal species’ best management practices. · Communicate with, and provide technical assistance to, private landowners as well as local, state and federal agencies on implementation of best management practices for focal wildlife species. · Complete trainings to pursue NRCS conservation planner certification and job approval authority. · Participate in relevant partner meetings at the state or regional level. · Complete any NRCS required trainings to maintain access to NRCS systems. · Write and submit quarterly and annual reports to AMJV and ABC. Position Requirements: · Graduation from an associate's degree program in forestry (e.g., forest management, urban forestry, forest science, agroforestry), wildlife (wildlife conservation, wildlife management, wildlife science) or similar conservation-related field, and two years of technical forestry and/or wildlife management experience; · or graduation from a bachelor's or master’s degree program in forestry (e.g., forest management, urban forestry, forest science, agroforestry), wildlife (wildlife conservation, wildlife management, wildlife science) or similar conservation-related field. Required Experience: · Accurately identify tree species across age classes (i.e., sapling to mature) and seasons (winter, summer, etc.). · A valid driver’s license and experience navigating a vehicle on unpaved roads or in off-road conditions. · Knowledge of NRCS landowner cost-share programs, especially EQIP. · Experience working with private landowners as well as public agencies (ex. Each year, we grow in budget and staff, and we deliver more results aimed at preventing bird species extinctions and reversing declines that are reducing populations of nearly all bird groups. The Great Lakes Oak Ecosystem Forester (Forester) will primarily work with private landowners, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Morton Arboretum, and other local partners in the region to implement best management practices (BMPs) on non-industrial private lands for focal bird species as part of ABC’s NRCS Oak Ecosystem Regional Conservation Partnership Program in NE Illinois and SE Wisconsin. The Forester will work closely with ABC’s Great Lakes Oak Ecosystem Coordinator to design and implement habitat management prescriptions for target focal species by working directly with NRCS and other collaborative partners. Duties will include, but are not limited to building partnerships, conducting outreach, promoting ABC and its various programs, providing technical forestry assistance for private landowners, and assisting with grant preparation and reporting. Primary Duties: The Forester’s main duties will be targeted within the identified focal areas of the NRCS Oak Ecosystem RCPP Project Area. Specific duties include: • Work within a team of partner biologists to implement the ABC NRCS Oak Ecosystem RCPP Project. The team will include the Oak Ecosystem Coordinator (lead on the project) and one additional Oak Ecosystem Private Lands Forester located within the project area. • Identify and communicate with landowners and natural resource managers within designated focal regions to implement bird conservation activities. • Conduct field visits on private lands to evaluate property for possible treatment using focal species BMPs. • Identify and delineate project areas for non-commercial oak management treatments. Identify and communicate with contractors capable of completing these treatments to continue developing a growing referral list for landowners. • Provide technical assistance to private landowners to facilitate the NRCS cost-share application and contracting process and develop site-specific conservation plans in accordance with NRCS practice standards and focal species BMPs. • Certify project completion via site visits, GPS tracking, and photo documentation to provide NRCS District Conservationists with GIS shapefiles and visual evidence to complete contracts and cost-share. • Provide outreach, education, and technical assistance to private landowners; technical service providers (TSP’s); and local, state and federal agency staff on habitat BMPs through workshops, trainings, meetings, etc. • Monitor and track project activities using an electronic database and GIS to ensure proper reporting for assessing success, and assist with focal species monitoring pre- and post- treatment. • Develop strong relationships with non-profit, agency, local government, and industry partners to expand collaborative conservation opportunities that advance bird conservation strategies. Specifically coordinate with Morton Arboretum on shared deliverables and oak ecosystem priorities. • Assist ABC Development staff and Oak Ecosystem Coordinator with preparing and reviewing fundraising proposals and assist with preparation of new funding/grant agreements and sub-awards. • Support ongoing research and monitoring activities including, but not limited to, obtaining landowner permission to conduct site surveys, conducting vegetation and bird surveys, placing and retrieving monitoring equipment (i.e., acoustic recording units), and managing data. Position Requirements: · Bachelor’s degree or higher in forestry, wildlife biology, or natural resources management is required. An advanced understanding of oak ecosystem improvement and management, wildlife management, the use of prescribed fire for natural community restoration, and a working knowledge of U.S. Department of Agricultural Farm Bill private lands incentive programs are essential. · Professional knowledge and skills to assess, devise, and apply silvicultural strategies for oak management to meet desired wildlife habitat and conservation objectives. Experience developing and implementing site-specific management plans/practices and the ability to utilize forest inventory tools and protocols. · Applicant must be prepared to travel within the project area with occasional travel outside the region. Title: Corvid Point Count/Recreation Site Assessment Field Technician Supervisor: Northwest Program Officer Location: Oregon or Washington Duration: June-July (2 months) Job Type: Temporary Salary: Monthly salary $2,500 with camping fees, meal per diem, and mileage reimbursement provided Application Deadline: Until Filled; Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled. Position Summary: SEASONAL FIELD TECHNICIANS needed by the American Bird Conservancy to conduct corvid point counts and recreation site infrastructure surveys as part of a program to assess nest predation threats to the endangered Marbled Murrelet in old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. Point counts for ravens, jays, and crows, and site assessments will be conducted in campgrounds and picnic sites on National Forests and state parklands in western Oregon and Washington. Surveys will be performed across a broad geographic area and require daily travel by car. Training will be conducted in a group, after which technicians will be assigned to work solo or in a team of two. This is an opportunity to explore the coastal old-growth forests of the northwest while assisting in the recovery of a threatened species. Primary Duties: Early morning point counts for nest predators (corvids), campground and picnic site assessments, and data entry. Point counts and site assessments will require some hiking. Coordination with campground hosts and state and federal site managers. Other responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) equipment maintenance, managing databases, proofing entered data, etc. Working solo or in a team of two. Work will be conducted 5 days per week, but the weekly schedule may vary due to weather conditions. Early morning starts are required for point counts. Housing will be provided and consist of camping in established campgrounds with four nights per month in a hotel or other rental accommodations. Camping will be located as close as possible to survey sites, but daily driving long distances may be required. Camping and field work conditions may be challenging including infrequent access to showers or laundry, driving on forest roads, hiking, and exposure to varying temperatures, sun, wind, rain, hail, etc. Camping and data collection equipment will be provided. Technicians driving personal vehicles for the duration of the work and will be reimbursed for mileage. Applicants without a personal vehicle are still encouraged to apply as vehicle sharing or a rental car may be a possibility. o Personal vehicles should be in good condition and able to handle dirt/gravel roads. *Note that road conditions may be difficult in some areas depending on weather. Job Description: The Rio Grande Joint Venture is looking to hire a point count technician for grassland bird and quail population monitoring as part of a coordinated bird monitoring effort to assess the impacts of grassland management in grassland-dominated regions of the South Texas Plains ecoregion. Point counts will be performed on private lands as part of an effort to assess the effectiveness of land management practices. This is an opportunity to be part of a large-scale grassland bird conservation effort involving partner conservation agencies and organizations in Texas. Primary duties: · Early-morning point counts on private lands to survey bird communities (will require hiking and coordination with landowners and biologists for access). · Data entry and proofing. · Other responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) equipment maintenance, managing databases, etc. Candidates will be expected to work long hours with early starts in relatively difficult field conditions (e.g., high temperatures, exposure to the elements (sun, wind, rain), intense hiking, active cattle pastures, venomous snakes, cactus, chiggers, ticks, etc.). · Housing, while in the field, will be arranged and will include bunk houses on WMAs, AirBnBs, and hotels. As such, candidates should be flexible about housing, are expected to adhere to current health advisories, and to be respectful of those around them. · The technician will regularly interact with Rio Grande Joint Venture partner organizations/agencies and landowners. As such, the technician must have excellent interpersonal skills, will be expected to represent the RGJV, and may be required to professionally interact with landowners in person or over the phone. · The technician will be required to drive a personal vehicle to and from field sites. o Mileage will be reimbursed for personal vehicles driven for work purposes during the field season ($0.67 per mile). o Personal vehicles should be in good condition, able to handle dirt/gravel roads, and ideally has high clearance and 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. *Note that road conditions may be difficult in some areas depending on weather. · Work schedules are highly dependent upon weather conditions, as well as access to properties, and it is subject to change throughout the field season. Position Summary: Title: Conservation Finance Officer, Migratory Bird Habitats, Latin America & the Caribbean Supervisor: Director, Migratory Bird Habitats in Latin America & Caribbean Location: Flexible/Remote Salary: Estimated at $75,000; based on experience Introduction: The mission of American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is to conserve birds and their habitats across the Americas. ABC is looking for an entrepreneurial person with conservation finance experience to work on the development of ABC's BirdsPlus Fund. The BirdsPlus Fund catalyzes investments to create and sustain a portfolio of investable, scalable, and replicable habitat conservation and restoration projects. Guided by science and working side by side with partners, ABC is implementing these conservation projects in landscapes vital for birds, which we call "BirdScapes." Since 2018, ABC and partners have piloted a pipeline of projects that aim to enhance habitat for migratory birds and generate market-competitive returns in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Honduras and seek to expand these efforts to other countries in the region. ABC seeks to hire a Conservation Finance Officer to join our Migratory Bird Habitats in Latin America & the Caribbean and BirdsPlus program to use their knowledge of and experience with a variety of conservation finance tools to develop blended finance deals and innovative financial solutions. The leadership of the Conservation Finance Officer will help us to protect and restore millions of acres of habitat for migratory bird species in Latin America and the Caribbean. This position will be remote in the United States and involve international travel. Primary Duties: The Conservation Finance Officer will: Develop and review business plans, financial models, pitch decks, and blended finance mechanisms. This person will work with their supervisor to explore financial mechanisms to scale the program's impact. Have experience with financial instruments like nature funds and bonds, the economics of nature-based solutions, carbon finance, or biodiversity credits to develop projects of this nature. Help develop partnerships with climate and conservation finance initiatives and major private and public funders, such as Global Environmental Facility, Green Climate Fund, and bilateral development agencies. Develop new projects and new phases of ongoing projects as part of the BirdsPlus Fund. Such projects will include scaling the impact of SMEs in the land use sector and working with corporations and investors. Have a strong understanding of agroforestry systems, climate change mitigation and adaptation, bird or wildlife conservation interventions and tools, and strategies to improve local livelihoods to incentivize conservation. Communicate with our partners in Latin America and the Caribbean to advance project activities, as well as travel to visit partners and project sites in rural areas. The accounting team will take an active role in testing and building good quality reporting in the new system. Verify financial data in Financial Edge for legitimacy, accuracy and allowability of charges. Create financial performance reports using data from Financial Edge for multiple grants from Federal, State and other bodies 2. Review and analyze financial performance v budgetary line items for material deviation. 3. Work with Program and development teams to understand financial performance and understand key trends. Explain variances. 4. Prepare and submit Financial Reports for federal, other governmental, and privately sponsored projects. Create invoices to be sent to donors. Manage various processes for receipt of funds from donors. Ensure compliance with all federal and state grant regulations 5. Coordinate across divisions and review submitted documents and submission of timely reports in accordance with sponsor financial reporting specifications. 6. Review critical award information set up in the financial system. 7. Monitor subawards and the financial performance of partners. Ensure payments are made in accordance with agreement 8. Assist with external audit reviews and provide financial and project information for awards within assigned areas. 9. Assist in the preparation of annual budgets. 10. Other duties as assigned. Position Requirements: 1. A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business or related field and at two to three years of work experience in finance and grants management. 2. Experience extracting data from accounting ledgers. 3. Experience of managing financial reporting for grants and contracts. Knowledge of measuring financial performance with Actual v Budget monitoring. 4. Some knowledge of federal and non-federal regulations, Uniform guidance, agreement types, and terms and conditions, sub-award monitoring is an advantage. 5. Proficiency with all Microsoft Office programs.
