Avian Field Technician Job Description: Powdermill Avian Research Center (PARC), field station of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, is seeking seasonal field technicians to assist with avian research in southwestern Pennsylvania from early or mid-August through the end of October 2024. The primary duties of this position include extracting birds from mist nets, assisting with PARC’s bird banding operation, and interacting with the public and other visitors. The field tech will work daily with North American Banding Council (NABC) certified Trainers and will have the opportunity to receive extra training in all aspects of banding (including ageing and sexing techniques) to NABC standards. Qualifications: strong candidates will have experience extracting, handling, and banding songbirds, must be able to identify eastern North American birds by sight, and be able to hike up to 6-10 miles per day in uneven or muddy terrain sometimes in inclement weather (e.g., hot, cold, rain). The successful candidate will be able to work well both independently and as part of the banding crew, and be able to interact with visitors to the banding station. Applicants must have at least a high school degree and at least 3 months of field experience banding birds. Candidates should have a valid drivers license. Principal Accountabilities: The principle responsibility of this position is assisting the Banding Program Manager with Powdermill’s avian research efforts. This includes extracting birds from mist nets, banding and collecting data from birds, collecting tissue (e.g. blood, feathers) and fecal samples from birds, Motus projects, repairing nets, trimming vegetation around net lanes, and recording and proofing data. The avian field technicians will also assist with public outreach efforts (e.g. periodic banding demos and field trips). Compensation: Pay is $16/hour for 40 hours per week. Powdermill Avian Research Center, located in southwestern Pennsylvania (www.powdermillarc.org), is pleased to announce that it will be holding two in-person bird banding workshops in September 2024: 1) Extraction and Banding Workshop: September 10-14 2) Ageing Birds by Molt Workshop: September 24-28 The Extraction and Banding workshop is designed for individuals with little or no banding experience, and focuses on safe handling of birds and extraction from mist nets, banding ethics, and banding methodology. Participants will be introduced to molt terminology, learning to age passerines using molt limits, the Pyle Guide, and molt cycle terminology. Participants in the Ageing Birds by Molt workshop are expected to be proficient in handling and extracting birds from nets. The workshop focuses on molt terminology, learning to age passerines using molt limits (and other characteristics), interpreting the Pyle Guide, and using molt cycle terminology. This workshop is an excellent primer for the NABC Bander Certification as we cover topics in the NABC banding handbook and study guide. Each workshop will begin on their respective Tuesday mornings and end Saturday at noon. The majority of time will be spent in the field with live birds (each banding day will begin before dawn), and these sessions will be complemented with afternoon presentations and discussions. The intended audience for these workshops is those who use bird banding in their research, including bird banding professionals, graduate students, volunteers at banding stations, wildlife professionals, or ornithologists. Because these are virtual workshops, there will not be a hands-on component, however we will have up-close instruction on ageing and sexing birds, and banding techniques, using high quality photographs taken during normal banding operations. This will be complimented with presentations and discussions about banding methodology, molt terminology including discussion of molt cycles, using molt limits to age North American passerines, how to use the Pyle Guide, scientific use of banding data, and ethics and permitting. The focus of these workshops is to train participants to recognize molt limits and to age and sex North American passerines.   6. Powdermill Nature Reserve is pleased to announce that it will be holding an in-person Ageing Birds with Molt Limits workshop in September 2021. Fall “Bird Banding and Ageing Birds via Molt Limits” Workshop: Wednesday, September 21 through Sunday, September 26. The workshop will begin at 6:00pm eastern time on Tuesday (9/21) with an introductory presentation and end Sunday (9/26) at noon. Participants will want to arrive during the day Tuesday (9/21) prior to the workshop. The majority of time will be spent in the field with live birds, and these sessions will be complemented with afternoon presentations and discussions. This workshop is an excellent primer for NABC (North American Banding Council) Bander Certification as we will cover banding ethics, banding methodology, molt terminology, and use of the Pyle Guide. The focus of this workshop is on training participants to age and sex passerines via plumage and molt limits, and will include discussions on molt terminology and how to decode the “Pyle Guide”. Participants are expected to have prior experience handling and extracting birds from nets. The workshop will begin in the morning on Friday, September 25 and end Sunday, September 27. Because this is a virtual workshop, there will not be a hands-on component, however each morning will have up-close ageing and sexing birds instruction using live birds during normal banding operations. These sessions will be complemented with afternoon or evening presentations and discussions about banding methodology, molt terminology including discussion of molt cycles, using molt limits in ageing birds, and the use of the Pyle Guide. The focus of this workshop is to train participants to recognize molt limits and to age and sex passerines.
