  1. Tetra Tech Inc. is currently seeking a part-time seasonal Wildlife Biologist to work on our client site in Point Mugu, CA. Are you ready to take the next step in your career? The selected candidate will perform nest surveys (monitoring and locating nests), conduct window surveys on snowy plovers, monitor plover and tern productivity from a blind overlooking one of the breeding colonies, and perform fledgling surveys of terns. Activities will also include discouragement of nest predators, predator control, maintaining detailed field notes, and database management. Applicant may also perform surveys for other bird species, turtle trapping, radio telemetry of island foxes on San Nicolas Island, and assist Navy biologists with other duties including light footed clapper rail surveys, endangered plant surveys, invasive plant removal, and native plant propagation. In addition, other natural resources support may include habitat restoration projects. The ideal candidate will have experience in nest surveys (monitoring and locating nests) with any species of plover or tern, and experience in identifying potential nest predators (bird and mammal) through tracks, sight, or calls. Applicants should be able to identify snowy plovers (by sex), least terns, and other shorebirds found in coastal habitat, locate nests in beach habitat, and identify mammal (coyote, opossum, raccoon, rabbit, weasel, and squirrel) and avian (raven, turkey vulture, gull, shrike) sign. Experience with radio telemetry, GPS data collection, data entry (Excel), and identifying native plants and animals is useful. Must have a B.S. in wildlife, biology, environmental science, or related science major. Candidates should be self-motivated, have a strong work ethic, pay close attention to detail, good observation skills, maintain a positive attitude during long hours in the blind, and be in good physical condition. Applicants must have the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team and have tolerance for outdoor activities including strenuous hiking on beaches and marshes, sitting quietly within an observation station located near the beach (including weekends) oftentimes in poor weather and after dark. As a field biologist, almost all of the hours will be spent outdoors, often in intertidal marshes (waders and hip boots at times), strenuous walking on long stretches of beaches for bird monitoring purposes, and long hours (up to 4 hours) sitting stationary in a monitoring station (blind) watching plover and least tern nesting activity. This position requires you to drive on a regular basis and will require passing a motor vehicle record (MVR) background check.
