  1. A field technician is needed to assist with ongoing research focused on investigating biodiversity within managed loblolly (Pinus taeda) pine forests. Research addresses effects of intercropping switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) in managed forest stands on early successional avian and plant communities. The technician will be responsible for conducting avian point counts, plant identification, and data entry. Additionally, there will be the possibility of assisting with telemetry of Chuck-will’s-widows and chances to handle and band a variety of species. Applicants should be working towards or have acquired a degree in a natural science such as wildlife management, biology, zoology, or other related fields. Preference will be given to those applicants who are comfortable identifying birds by sight and sound, have avian point count experience, and have plant identification skills. Applicants must be physically capable of working under adverse conditions, such as dense vegetation, venomous snakes, high heat and humidity, working in direct sunlight, biting flies, ticks and chiggers, and contact with poison ivy. Ability to get along well with a diverse group of people is important. Anticipated start dates will be May 4nd- May 9th, 2019 with the end date being July 19th, 2019, with the possibility of extension. Some flexibility with start and end dates will be allowed for the right candidate. Technicians will be expected to work some weekends as necessary. Basic housing and vehicles for fieldwork will be provided. Salary will be $400/wk for approximately 11 weeks. To apply, please send electronic copies of 1) cover letter, 2) resume or CV, and 3) the names and contact information for three professional references to Rebecca Bracken at rb2247@msstate.edu.
