  1. I am looking for up to 2 internship students, at either the BSc or MSc level, to work with me on my project on mating systems biology and ecology in Plovers in Madagascar. Since 2002, the breeding systems of three species (Madagascan Plover, White-fronted Plover, Kittlitz’s Plover) have been studied intensively across Madagascar. The positions will span a period of up to 6 months, with some flexibility in the time period. Ideally, the students will be based in Debrecen, however, given current global circumstances, I am also happy to consider working remotely. If students do come to Hungary, the project will cover some of their living costs. For highly motivated students and/or those with the appropriate experience, I am willing to consider the possibility of extending their projects and covering the costs for them to visit and work at our field site in SW Madagascar in spring 2021. This project is in collaboration with Tamás Székely (University of Bath; University of Debrecen) and Sama Zefania (University of Toliara). I would particularly welcome students who have their own ideas and questions that they would like to explore and develop using the Plover system. Potential topics include habitat choice, mating system evolution, nesting success, incubation behaviours and dispersal. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn how to manage and drive an independent project. Debrecen is the second largest city in Hungary and has a lively university community. The University of Debrecen was established in 1538, and it is one of the prestigious universities in Central Europe. The university has over 4000 students – many are from abroad. The Dept. of Evolutionary Zoology and Human Biology is one of the leading departments in natural sciences. Debrecen Airport has connections with some of the main European airports. Project description: Vector borne diseases are a major threat to human, domesticated and wildlife populations. Many vectors are bloodsucking insects that rely on olfactory cues for finding their meal. These olfactory cues can be manipulated by the pathogen to ensure transmission. We will use avian malaria to study the chemical ecology of vector borne pathogen transmission. First, we will investigate how particular malaria strains and the birds' MHC genes determine odour profiles. Second, we will use a combination of blood-feeding behavioural tests and RNAseq to reveal the genetic basis to variation in vector responses to host odour profiles. We predict that specific avian malaria strains affect their vectors such that they avoid hosts with MHC genes that would allow the host to defend themselves. Our results will also lead to predictions of specific combinations of genotype frequencies of hosts, pathogens and vectors that promote pathogen transfer resulting in more infected individuals in the population.These predictions will be tested using data from geographically separated populations. We also predict that the pathogen strains that are most efficiently transmitted between hosts also are the most virulent ones. Our findings will be relevant in the general context of predicting and preventing the spread of vector borne pathogens. Our results will in particular contribute to improved general guidelines for predictions of the likelihood and consequences of pathogen range expansion. Duties: Analyze and publish already available data, perform experiments in the field and contribute to the future development of the project. Qualifications required: A doctoral degree, or a foreign degree equivalent to a doctoral degree, in ecology and/or evolution. Previous experiences with analyses of genomic data are required. Candidates must be able to express themselves fluently in spoken as well as written English. In ranking eligible candidates special importance will be given to scientific skills. Qualifications desired: Earlier experiences of field work on birds are desired.
