The Wetlands Institute, located in Stone Harbor, New Jersey, is seeking qualified applicants for several seasonal steward positions to protect beach-nesting birds on some of the most beautiful and scenic beaches in southern New Jersey. Primary responsibilities include acting as an overall ambassador for the conservation of beach-nesting birds by providing educational information and opportunities to the public about shorebird conservation and beach regulations, preventing disturbance to beach-nesting birds and at times directly intervening to stop a disturbance, and documenting and reporting disturbances. Training for position-related responsibilities and shorebird identification will be provided. Multiple Steward positions and one Crew Leader position will be filled. These are temporary, hourly positions with flexible scheduling options ranging from part-time to full-time. Early morning, weekend, and holiday hours will be required. The duration of the positions is approximately 14 weeks (Memorial Day-Labor Day), with possibility for extension into late September. Candidates should be available for the duration of the positions. Positions will require sitting for several hours, or walking long distances over sandy beach, and tolerating exposure to variable and sometimes adverse weather and environmental conditions (wind, rain, heat, biting insects). The Crew Leader position (1) will require scheduling, data management, and report writing. Applicants for all positions should have a positive attitude, an outgoing personality, and experience or a willingness to learn about conservation of beach-nesting birds. Applicants should also have experience or interest in learning how to follow protocols, collect careful data, and calmly defuse conflict. Applicants should be able to work well alone or in small groups. Salary is $9/hr-12.00/hr, depending on experience and position responsibilities. Housing is not provided. A valid driver’s license and personal transportation is required. Reimbursement for project-related travel will be provided.
