SEASONAL FULL-TIME: ASSISTANT (1) PASSERINE BIRD BANDER One full-time, seasonal bird banding position is available with the Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation (JHWF) from late May 2024 through late-August 2024. Job Description: Assistant Bird Bander will assist in the operation of two Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) stations. Banders will extract and process songbirds according to MAPS protocols and complete data entry and proofing for approx. 2.5 days each week. Banding station operations also include a heavy component of volunteer management and visitor engagement. Banders will also manage a Mountain Bluebird (MOBL) nestbox monitoring project. Duties related to the MOBL project include volunteer management, nestbox monitoring, color band re-sighting, data entry and proofing, and other project support. During the summer, banders may also assist with banding operations at a third MAPS station, ride along as lead birder on Snake River Float trips, and band nestling and adult Mountain Bluebirds. Requirements: • High competency with mist netting, aging, sexing, and banding passerines and near-passerines required • At least two seasons of bird banding experience OR at least 1000 birds independently extracted and processed required • Excellent bird identification skills (including by ear) required, familiarity with Rocky Mountain species strongly desired • Knowledge of MAPS protocols strongly desired • Nest monitoring experience desired but not necessary • Detail-oriented approach to collecting, entering, and proofing data • Ability to navigate the challenges of field work with a positive attitude (mosquitoes, early mornings, etc.) • Good common sense regarding dangerous wildlife (moose, bears) • Ability to walk up to ten miles a day at ~6000ft elevation over uneven terrain • Excellent interpersonal skills • Ability to work independently and as part of a team • A valid driver’s license Compensation: Compensation is $7600/season for the Assistant Bander position. On top of the base salary, overtime worked at a third banding station will be compensated with time and a half. Additionally, we provide a housing stipend and mileage reimbursement ($4500/season per person). Banders will use a company vehicle for driving from the office to the work sites. No fringe benefits or health insurance are provided. Start and end dates are somewhat negotiable, but preference will be given to applicants who can commit to the full 14-week season.
