  1. Spring Hawk Counter at Brockway Mountain, Michigan Location: Brockway Mountain, near Copper Harbor, MI Duration: March 15 – June 15, 2020 Application Deadline: January 20, 2020 or until position is filled Job Description: The Keweenaw Bird Research Group http://www.thekbrg.org/ is seeking an experienced hawk counter to conduct the spring raptor count at Brockway Mountain, which is located near Copper Harbor, on the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. A three-month count has been conducted here for the past seven years. The site offers spectacular views of migrating raptors, often at eye level or below. This northern location can get a high volume of Northern Goshawks and Rough-legged Hawks. We are seeking a motivated hawk counter to count raptors 6 days/week, with some additional time off when warranted by weather conditions. The counter will enter hourly and daily count totals using a tablet and data entry software that we will provide. The counter will enter data into the online HawkCount database of the Hawk Migration Association of North America (HMANA). A written report summarizing the count is required shortly after the end of the field season. The primary focus is on raptors, but all migrating birds are to be recorded, as there is a significant movement of loons, geese, cranes, and passerines at this site. Pay for the season is $5000, plus an additional $200 upon completion of the seasonal report. Housing in Copper Harbor will be provided. This is a tough count. Conditions will be cold and windy for at least the first 6 weeks. The counter will reach the count site by snowmobile for the first month or so. We will provide the snowmobile (and fuel), for the counter to drive to work each day. Once the road is open to automobile traffic, the counter will need their own car to reach the site. Copper Harbor is a small, very friendly town with some amenities, but the nearest large grocery stores are 35-45 minutes away in Calumet, Houghton and Hancock. The count site is beautiful but isolated. There will be few visitors early in the season, but by season’s end it is a popular stop for tourists. Qualifications: Strong skills at identifying North American raptors in flight. Applicants with experience at other hawk watch sites preferred. Ability to withstand cold, windy conditions is required. Applicants who are also skilled in identifying non-raptor bird species strongly preferred. Must be able to work alone and independently, but also to interact well with visiting birders and the general public. To apply: Send cover letter, resume, and the names, email addresses, and phone numbers of 3 references by email to brockwaymountain@gmail.com ; or call Louie Dombroski at (906) 291-0291 for more information.
