  1. Since 1983 HawkWatch International teams have monitored spring and fall raptor migration at a network of sites across western N. America. These efforts are vital in documenting changes in regional populations for many species, and highlighting those meriting additional research and conservation efforts due to local or regional declines. We seek 4-6 enthusiastic team players to staff HawkWatch International’s (HWI) long-term migration monitoring sites in western North America for the spring 2024 season. Crewmember duties include a combination of standardized daily migration counts of diurnal raptors and engaging and delivering outreach to site visitors (both scheduled and impromptu). Length of Appointment: Spring migration season runs from 15 February through April (Tubac HawkWatch) and 10 March through 15 May (Gunsight Mountain. HawkWatch). Positions require a full-season commitment and weekly schedules include 1 day off. HawkWatch Locations: Alaska - Gunsight Mtn. HawkWatch (season runs March 10-15 May) Arizona - Tubac HawkWatch (season runs February 15-April 30) Qualifications: Good eyesight Ability to endure and stay focused during long hours in the field in highly variable weather Demonstrated birding and/or raptor-in-flight I.D. skills Ability to pleasantly and professionally engage site visitors about the work while representing HWI Ability to work well in a remote and intimate small team setting Excellent data collection skills (detailed, accurate, and in accordance w/ protocols) and the ability to digitally log data Willingness and ability to follow federal, local, and HWI safety protocols Qualifications of top applicants: Previous experience conducting raptor migration counts Experience engaging visitors of all ages and skills about conservation efforts Compensation: This is a volunteer position with crewmembers receiving a daily living stipend ($55/day in Arizona, $65/day in Alaska), including off days. HWI will also assist with some costs of travel to the sites (varies by site). Per diem are disbursed bi-weekly via direct deposit. Living arrangements: Lodging provided at both sites. Crewmembers should have their own optics and vehicle (Tubac HW). Transportation is provided at the Gunsight Mtn. HW. HawkWatch International seeks 2-3 interns to assist with multiple raptor research programs, including American Kestrel Studies (85%), Burrowing Owl Nesting Ecology (10%), and studies of small forest owls (5%). The internships will run from 18 March through 2 August and come with a $600/week stipend. Current undergraduate students who are available for full-time work or recent graduates from a biology, wildlife, or natural resources program qualify for this internship, which is designed to offer field experience to those just beginning careers in conservation. Interns will work 5-6 days per week, with some weekend work. Specific learning/training opportunities include: Assisting HWI staff, graduate student, and community scientists with nest box maintenance and /or installation and the monitoring of American Kestrel, Western Screech-owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, and other cavity-nesting species nests Using high-end spotting scope during efforts to resight colorbanded American Kestrels as part of a long-term movement and survival study Installation, upkeep, and retrieval of data from cameras set to document prey deliveries to nests Assisting with capture and banding (including colorbanding) of nestling and adult American Kestrels, using both hand-capture and bal chatri traps Assisting with collection of feather and blood, samples as part of genetic and contaminant studies Design and complete (with guidance) own small research effort within larger study system (can be on some aspect of kestrel work, or on other species in study area) Exposure to research and outreach efforts at conservation non-profit organizations Exposure working with and coordinating a large group of volunteer community scientists Data entry, quality assurance/control, equipment care, and curation of field samples See the position description for more details. Crewmember duties include a combination of standardized daily migration counts of diurnal raptors, safely engaging and delivering outreach to site visitors (both scheduled and impromptu), and at a subset of sites, assisting with capture and banding of migrating raptors (OR, NV, WY, and NM). Length of Appointment: Fall migration seasons generally run from mid-August through mid-November, specific dates are site-dependent (see below). Positions require a full-season commitment and weekly schedules include 1 day off. Per diem are disbursed bi-weekly via direct deposit. Living arrangements: Most of our HawkWatches are in high-elevation remote areas and require camping; all crewmembers must supply their own camping gear** (be equipped for all-season camping) and should have their own vehicle to access the sites (or trailheads near sites). Accommodations for days-off (one per week) or weather episodes are generally available in nearby local communities.
