  1. We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our international, interdisciplinary research team studying waterfowl movements and avian influenza threats in the changing agricultural landscape of eastern China. The position will be stationed at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Maryland via the University of Oklahoma (OU). A One-Health, Big Data framework approach will be taken, with collaboration among federal, academic, and international agency partners under this multi-year NSF-funded project. We aim for the selected candidate to begin work in January 2021, with some flexibility related to COVID-19 precautions. Position Description: The postdoctoral researcher will focus on conducting geo-spatial analyses and simulation modeling projects to examine the role of waterfowl in the transmission of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in China, an endemic region and epicenter of novel HPAIs. Modeling efforts will include developing agent-based models (ABMs) for wild waterfowl species and applying compartmentalized susceptible-exposed-infectious-recovered (SEIR) disease models for highly pathogenic avian influenza transmission at the wild bird-domestic bird-human interface. Waterfowl movement ecology, species distribution modeling, and forecasting for the bird components will be inputs integrated with phylogenetic analyses investigating virus evolution and changes in agricultural systems in eastern China. This postdoctoral researcher position will be hired through the University of Oklahoma and will be based at PWRC as the off-site employee of the University of Oklahoma, under the supervision of Dr. Diann Prosser (USGS PWRC, Co-Investigator of the project). The selected candidate will work with Dr. Diann Prosser, Dr. John Y. Takekawa (Consulting Waterfowl Expert), and Dr. Xiangming Xiao (OU, Project Director). The PWRC is a world-renowned wildlife research center located in Laurel, Maryland, 30 minutes north of Washington D.C. The PWRC in-lab interactions will include other post-docs, long-term technicians, graduate students, and interns. Required Expertise and Skills: The ideal candidate will have a proven publication record with a doctoral degree in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Mathematics, Epidemiology, GIS, Statistics, or a related field. We seek a candidate who is highly motivated, able to work independently, and good at communicating within an international team with diverse scientific expertise. Candidates with Bayesian, Spatial, Movement Ecology, and Machine-Learning experience will be preferred. Proficiency using R is required. Experience using high performance computing, Python, ArcGIS, NetLogo, and related statistical software is a plus. Salary: Starting salary will be $50,000 per year with university employee benefits including medical, dental, and life insurance. Hiring is contingent on a background check. This position will be appointed on an annual basis with potential renewal up to four years, dependent upon candidate's performance and fund availability. Dr. Diann Prosser’s Lab of the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center is searching for a highly motivated and talented quantitative researcher or statistician to work on a suite of ecology, spatial modeling, and avian disease research. This position will consist primarily of quantitative modeling and statistical consulting focusing on animal movement analyses, wildlife disease prevalence and risk modeling, as well as distribution, forecasting and ensemble modeling. There may be opportunities to participate in field work, although this is not a focus of this position. The Patuxent Wildlife Research Center is a world-renowned research institution located within 30 minutes of Annapolis, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. Types of services required: Examples of potential working tasks include designing and/or performing analyses on a variety of datasets including wild bird satellite, GSM, and nanotag telemetry data; creating ensemble models to assess risk of zoonotic disease emergence from wild to domestic populations including avian influenza viruses; waterbird population modeling; and agent based modeling with wildlife disease applications. In addition to the main projects included in this position, the successful applicant will be asked to regularly consult on analytical methods for previously collected data as well as the design of new studies. Co-authorship on publications is encouraged. Proficiency in R is essential, with experience in ArcGIS being beneficial. The candidate must be willing to assist with various projects other than those mentioned above, as this lab works on a variety of topics. Required expertise/skills: The ideal candidate has a doctoral degree in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Statistics, Natural Resources, GIS, Mathematics, or a related field. Experience with both frequentist and Bayesian methods is required, as is demonstrated proficiency with a wide breadth of analytical methods for ecological analyses. Candidates with Spatial, Movement Ecology, Forecasting, Machine Learning, and High Performance Computing experience is a plus. The candidate must be highly motivated and able to work independently, as well as have strong capacity to communicate well with the team. Principal Duty Station: This position will be based at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, 12100 Beech Forest Road, Laurel, MD 20705 and is contracted through Natural Systems Analysts, Inc. Start date is flexible depending on top candidate, however, January 2021 is desired. Given COVID-19 restrictions, some flexibility will be given to remote start date versus on-site. Salary is approximately $59K with benefits. The position is funded for 1 year with potential for 3-4 years depending on performance and fund availability.
