Job Summary: The Senior Coastal Adaptation Ecologist contributes to development of, executes the strategy for, and collaborates to achieve Point Blue’s coastal adaptation research and policy goals. Leads and develops key research areas and provides a bridge between coastal science and decision making. Works in partnership with research collaborators, coastal resource managers, and decision makers to use the best available science to plan for and adapt to sea level rise and other climate change stressors along the coast. Essential Functions: Research: 65% ● Work collaboratively with staff across Point Blue, as well as externally with public and private partners to carry out research, including synthesis of large data sets, performing complex and varied analyses, and engaging in dissemination of research results. ● Conduct complex data synthesis, data analysis, prepare research results, and communicate results in internal and external meetings. ● Participate in developing and promoting effective and appropriate natural or nature-based approaches to climate-smart adaptation, incorporating the latest scientific results and the needs of stakeholders. ● Conduct literature evaluation, prepare strategies and approaches, and communicate strategies and approaches in meetings. ● Manage projects (including program budgets and expenses, staff hours and progress on deliverables) to ensure that projects are performed on time and on-budget towards achieving Point Blue strategic plan outcomes. ● Lead or participate in the writing of reports, publications, and other literature. Position Description: We are seeking a Laboratory Research Assistant for marine predator diet studies, zooplankton research, data-related tasks, and outreach activities at our Petaluma, California Headquarters. Our studies determine size class and species composition of prey consumed by seabirds and California sea lions, and we examine krill and their relationships with seabirds and other top-predator populations in the Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries. Main laboratory duties include: Identifying otoliths and other fish parts from diet samples (regurgitated pellets and fecal samples) of Brandt’s cormorants, least terns, and California sea lions; identifying zooplankton taxa and age classes from diet samples (regurgitations) of Cassin’s auklets; preparing zooplankton samples and identifying, weighing, and measuring krill, copepods, and other important zooplankton groups; collecting species composition and size data on prey specimens dropped on seabird breeding colonies; entering and proofing data; and helping to compile information from 50+ years of seabird studies on the Farallon Islands. Other duties include: Assisting with the bi-monthly Farallon Island patrol runs, which includes packing and transporting supplies to/from local marinas, taking Farallon compost to a local farm, and keeping patrol run containers clean and organized; participating in online outreach activities (mainly Instagram and Facebook Live events) and in-person events at local museums and community colleges; and training and supervising seasonal interns and laboratory volunteers. There may be opportunities for field work, such as participating in at-sea surveys in the Gulf of the Farallones (duties include assisting in net tows, collecting hydrographic data, and conducting seabird and marine mammal surveys), and/or participating in nest surveys of an endangered California least tern colony in San Francisco Bay (duties include walking through colony with permitted biologists, marking nests, collecting data, and collecting diet samples to be analyzed in the lab). Technician and Lead Technician for Avian Surveys and Banding in Sierra Nevada Meadows We are seeking a Seasonal Lead Technician (1 position) and Seasonal Technicians (2 positions) to collect demographic data on birds breeding in meadow habitats in the iconic Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Field work includes nest searching, nest monitoring, territory mapping, banding, and vegetation and habitat surveys for birds breeding in meadow habitats of the iconic Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. These positions collect data that will be used to inform the restoration and stewardship of meadows in the Sierra Nevada and Southern Cascades. The Lead Technician will serve as the lead bander in charge at 2 MAPS stations. The Technicians will assist with banding and extracting birds at two MAPS stations, depending on prior experience. All positions may assist with point count surveys depending on experience. The Lead Technician will train and supervise the two Technicians to ensure data is collected and entered accurately, completely, and to-protocol. Work weeks vary from 5-6 days and are typically 40-45 hours but vary from 35-50 hours. Qualifications: Lead Technician: Must have at least one full season of work experience nest searching and territory mapping for passerine species. Lead Technician: Must have at least one season of work experience banding passerine and near-passerine species as a lead bander. Technician: Must have work experience nest searching for passerine species. Must be able to identify 10 bird species by sight and sound following 1 week of in-field training. Must feel confident in your ability to hike and navigate cross-country in complex wetland habitats with uneven ground and dense shrub cover. We require self-motivation, enthusiasm, good sense of direction, the ability to cope with inclement weather, willingness to spend long hours in the field observing birds and their habitat with additional time in the office, and the ability to work well independently and in a group living situation. Must a valid U.S. driver’s license, at least two years of driving experience, and will be asked to provide information to verify their good driving record with one or fewer moving violations in the last three years. This program offers a unique opportunity to explore and observe birds in some of the most beautiful landscapes in California, across a wide range of habitats, while collecting data to guide management and restoration in the Sierra Nevada and Southern Cascades. These immersive apprenticeships teach landbird research techniques and data-driven solutions to conservation challenges. Apprentices completing our program leave with a comprehensive knowledge base, including the ability to design and implement conservation research, communicate research to the public, and ensure data are incorporated effectively into data management systems and resource management planning efforts. This position has a strong emphasis on mist-netting and bird banding. Apprentices will run long-term mist netting stations ~3-6 days per week (number of days of banding varies by month and is weather dependent). The position includes early mornings and long hours in the field, followed by data entry and verification. A typical field day starts before sunrise and involves hiking 5-7 miles; the terrain has some incline and can be uneven. Apprentices will typically work 5 days per week (~40-48 hours), with two occasionally non-consecutive days off per week; however, inclement field weather (e.g. rain, wind) may result in only one day off per week (and occasional 35-50 hour work weeks). Overtime pay applies (for days > 8 hours and weeks > 40 hours). The start and end dates for this position will be staggered across the crew. WESTERN SNOWY PLOVER CONSERVATION APPRENTICE at Point Blue Conservation Science Location: Monterey, CA Duration: 4.3 months in March-August, 2024 Position Type: Apprentice Deadline to Apply: February 16th, 2024  Position Description: The Western Snowy Plover Conservation Apprentice will be an employee of Point Blue Conservation Science and part of a five-person Point Blue team. The Apprentice will also participate in a multi-agency management team that works collaboratively to achieve snowy plover conservation outcomes. The collaborative team includes staff from Point Blue Conservation Science, CA State Parks (Santa Cruz and Monterey districts), USFWS (Salinas River National Wildlife Refuge), USFWS (Ventura Field Office), and US Department of Agriculture, Wildlife Services. The Apprentice will participate in field monitoring of breeding snowy plovers on Monterey Bay sandy beaches (50%), entering and managing snowy plover data (20%), implementing snowy plover habitat protections and other management actions (5%), and participating in collaborative team meetings (5%), while designing and implementing an individual project targeted toward achieving specific learning outcomes (20%). The individual project will be developed in consultation with a USFWS collaborator. Field work takes place on public beaches and entails using optics (binoculars and scope), color band resighting, behavioral observations, nest monitoring, and interacting with the public. The Apprentice will work a total of 4.3 months (745 hours) between March-August of 2024. A start date of April 1st is preferred but could be as late as May 1st. Schedule is flexible and can be a combination of part-time during the final semester of an academic year and full time during the summer, or full time for a shorter duration. Our studies determine size class and species composition of prey consumed by seabirds and California sea lions, and we examine krill and their relationships with seabirds and other top-predator populations in the Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries. Main laboratory duties include: Identifying otoliths and other fish parts from diet samples (regurgitated pellets and fecal samples) of Brandt’s cormorants, least terns, and California sea lions; identifying zooplankton taxa and age classes from diet samples (regurgitations) of Cassin’s auklets; preparing zooplankton samples and identifying, weighing, and measuring krill, copepods, and other important zooplankton groups; collecting species composition and size data on prey specimens dropped on seabird breeding colonies; entering and proofing data; and helping to compile information from 50+ years of seabird studies on the Farallon Islands. Other duties include: Assisting with the bi-monthly Farallon Island patrol runs, which includes packing and transporting supplies to/from local marinas, taking Farallon compost to a local farm, and keeping patrol run containers clean and organized; participating in online outreach activities (mainly Instagram Live events); and training and supervising seasonal interns and laboratory volunteers.
