We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to assist with a PhD project investigating responses of Grey Fantails (Rhipidura albiscapa) to brood parasitism by cuckoos.
Fieldwork will take place in Brisbane Ranges National Park (Victoria Australia, near Geelong) from September 2024 through February 2025. Given the long breeding season, volunteers do not need to commit to the entire field season in order to apply, but longer commitments are preferred as it helps with scheduling. We are also able to accommodate work / school schedules.
Primary duties of volunteers include: nest searching and monitoring for Grey Fantails. Additional opportunities may include assisting with bird banding, setting up equipment for video and acoustic recordings, and conducting model presentations and behavioural observations. A typical day in the field begins just before sunrise and continues into the early afternoon, followed by data entry after returning from the field.
The project can provide shared housing and food for two volunteers (pending funding). Volunteers requiring housing should be comfortable with sharing a room, living with several other people, and be respectful and tolerant of all others.
While no prior experience is required, applicants with previous experience birding, banding, nest searching, behavioural observations, recording video or acoustic behaviours, etc. are highly encouraged to apply.
