I am seeking one or two dedicated volunteers to assist with data collection on the critically endangered Crow Honeyeater in New Caledonia. The main tasks will involve tracking VHF-tagged birds to monitor daily and seasonal movements, improving sightings of this elusive species, and collecting data on their feeding, social, and acoustic behaviors. The project is based in the Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue, approximately 30 km from Nouméa, one of the best locations to observe New Caledonia's endemic bird species.
The volunteer period will run from December 2024 to February 2025, with some flexibility depending on suitable candidates.
Requirements:
Prior experience in bird monitoring (with or without telemetry).
Volunteers should be physically fit, as some days may be long, although the hiking in the study area is generally easy (low elevation, open undergrowth).
Accommodation:
Onsite accommodation is provided, including electricity, a kitchen, hot showers, and beds. Accommodation in Nouméa (10–20 minutes by bike from beaches) may also be arranged for rest days, depending on the candidate.
I welcome applications from students seeking practical experience for degree requirements, as well as experienced ornithologists interested in discovering New Caledonia's biodiversity hotspot in a "woofing" style. The volunteer position can be tailored to the right candidates.
If interested, please email me with an outline of your project and relevant experience to Thomas Duval (hemisnc@gmail.com).
